What would you do ?

Lots of people are still out with the holidays/vacations, so (by default) I'm in charge of my (very small) department. My co-worker (night shifter) comes in moaning and groaning about a "sinus infection." He spends the next two hours complaining non-stop about how terrible he feels, complete with dramatic coughing, and how he's trying to get a doctor's appointment. I finally tell him, "Look, do you want to go home ? If so, I'll cover for you." He makes some feeble protestations about feeling guilty for having me work double-shift. I reassure him that if he's that sick, then he needs to go home. He then says "oh well ok" and takes off.

Shortly afterwards, another co-worker asks me why I'm doing his work. I tell him the guy went home sick. He says "Yeah, with a hangover. Check his Myspace page." Sure enough -- he's posted "Mood: "Hung over." Updated today.

What would you do ?

So you're making more $$ with a double shift? I'd thank him.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

IMHO, what someone puts on a "MySpace" is hardly incriminating and should not be taken literally or seriously. Now, if he sent out a company memo, that is different. What's next? Employers signing on to these sites to see if their "at home sick" workers are signed on and chatting? Then create a fake profile and start the inquest?

Who cares what the guy does? He's probably losing a lot more than you are gaining.

LOL I printed a copy of his MySpace page. Maybe I should just circle the mood and write "####### ???" on it and leave it on his desk...

If your company is lenient about internet access at work, then I think it would be ok to hand him the copy you printed and ask him what is it all about, but I wouldn't wouldn't just leave it on his desk because he could possibly turn it into some sort of invasion of privacy or using company time and printer on non-work related material.

that would be quite a weak argument......

plus i have to wonder just how someone could be accused of invasion of privacy on a public board.

Hahaha @ "sounds like USCIS":whistle:

Well overtime is not a factor in my position -- I am salaried. I don't punch a time clock. Basically, my boss allows me to be very flexible with my time, as long as I complete my tasks in superior fashion. If I work extra hours, I can "comp" it out -- either take entire days off, or take a few hours here or there, coming in late or leaving early. My boss leaves all that up to me to arrange (his only priority is that our department's tasks get done properly.)

And luckily, using the internet for personal reasons while on the job is not an issue (unless it interferes with the completion of our projects.) In fact, my job requires using the internet a LOT.

Basically, it's a "gotcha" situation. I wasn't looking to "bust" him, I was being NICE to him by offering to cover him. Someone else knew the truth and tipped me off.

So I'll just let him know I'm onto him -- no big deal, no need to make a stink over it (actually my boss would probably laugh and say "what an idiot!" too :P) We'll work it out.... but he WILL pay me back !
