Tim uses a calling card called Penny Talk. He has it automatically updated online when it runs out. It used to be 2 cents / minute to call Canada, but I think it is now 1 cent. And apparently you can use it out of Canada now too! Before you could only use it in the States.

Course...we do most of our talking online, through chat, and voice chat...which is way cheaper!! LOL

I sit at the computer and yell "HONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

and he comes over =)

LOL That's funny!!

I'll do that too...but then it will be "how do you call your American?".....

I'm not sure if anyone has added this in their reply. I'm lazy and haven't had coffee yet.

Chris has Vonage ($25/month). I wanted to add free long distance with Vonage anywhere in Canada and US. So when he called me it was free.

We arranged it so he has an Edmonton phone number though living in HI/AK. So when I lived in Edmonton, I could call him whenever I wanted from my cell/work etc for free.

When he wasn't home, he'd arrange his Vonage # to forward to his cell phone (easy as logging into vonage and entering the # to forward to).

So when he wasn't home, I could call him on his cell and it wouldn't cost either of us a dime. In the end we just kept the phone forwarded to his cell. It was a good option for $25/month. No more long distance.

I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Vonage is great - I also have the 'local' Calgary number so people can call me.

The price for that, with the Vonage anywhere in NA calling is now $ 37.65 per month.

Trailmix, do you use Vonage V-Phone (desktop) or Vonage V-Portal (laptop)?

We use it with our desktop - I wasn't familiar with the terms you used so looked them up, basically we have the V-Portal unit, which in theory we could use with a laptop (i'm not sure what a V-phone is with regard to vonage?)

I believe it's a memory stick as opposed to a box.

Ohhhhh!! There is even a picture of it right on the page I was reading  - interesting! I guess it is a nice wireless thing that would be really handy when you were travelling!

I noticed that you have to plug your headset in to the device though, rather than the regular phone you can use with the other model - then you would have to sit at your computer to talk...unless maybe you had a wireless headset, hmm.

Oh, okay. Well that makes my decision easier. So if I screw it up when I install it, can Mike come and fix it for me?

We have had Vonage for over 2 years now and I love it.. I like being able to pick up the phone and being able to call anywhere in the US or Canada without worrying about long distance charges...

My favorite is when people dial the wrong number, and you get to say, actually you're calling Hawaii. And then they're like - what but I didn't dial long distance? They get so confused. Although its 10 digit dialing in AB now, so that doesn't happen as much anymore.

I had a bad experience with Vonage.... when my hubby and I started dating, he had no land line so signed up for Vonage so we could talk and it was always really fuzzy and would disconnect.... sometimes I couldn't hear him and there would be blocks in our convo... It was like he was really far away! Finally he gave up and got Verizon which is great !!
