The way my USC fiance worked out the calling thing was for me just to buy 10 dollar phone cards at a time.. They would usually last me 800-900 mins or so.. so i thought those were a pretty good deal. My fiance would only call me with your regular minutes @ long distance rates for emergencies or like 2 or 3 minute convos.

This thread title always reminds me of that song from "Dirty Dancing" that starts out with the "How do you call your loverboy" part.

When I was living in Canada and using my North America's Choice plan through Verizon, from time to time I incurred some roaming charges. I called to gripe and was told there is no roaming around most major cities but not totally "roaming charge free" in Canada. Originally I had a National plan plus Canada where I had literally no roaming anywhere in the US and Canada but didnt offer any night minutes, only 2000 weekend minutes. When they wooed me to switch to the all improved North America's Choice plan ( National plan was ending) they said it would "better"........I didnt think the surprise roaming charges were better and the fact they wouldn't comp them since they werent clear about what the roaming possibilities were, I was even less impressed. Anyway Im still with Verizon and have a family share plan ........however when I wanted to get a phone for my husband to use in Canada , I was told that calling would be charged against our regular minutes and not our unlimited "IN" minutes as the phone would not be being used in our home area. So I dunno , maybe I got wrong info.......I would make a phone call before signing a contract and explain exactly what u want to accomplish.

 Love it! That's what we do too! ;)

I had an international calling plan with my Cingular/AT&T cellphone...wasn't the best in the world but it worked. I also used a long distance dial around plan for my landline. You know, one of those "10-10" lines. Yeah, it was a lot of dialing but it was worth it. We still use it now to call home. .39 cents to connect, .03 cents per minute to talk. So far, this is what works for us. :)

What's the 10-10 number you use, Karen? I used to use one in Canada to call England. I'd talk for ages and it would only cost me, like, $3.00!!!!

Did you use Yak in Canada? I use yak (10-15-945) - there is the loonie call too - like an hour to the U.S. for a dollar or something - I think it's like a penny or two cheaper per minute than Yak to Australia - but I have the Yak number memorized so we still use that, I mean how many numbers can you reasonably memorize!

All I know is if you don't memorize your SSN they get really tetchy here.

I haven't heard of Yak. You can use that here? Is that the full number? I was using something like 10-1212... can't remember now. But if I can still use it here I'm definitely gonna try!

We use 10-10-811+1+area code and then the number to call home. I really don't mind all the dialing...I'm fairly fast with the dialing. I guess it's like typing, once you learn where the keys are you can type fast...same with the dialing. :)
