What I said wasn't uplifting?

Oh, I'm sorry.

I meant it genuinely. Try to stay strong and look on the bright side.[/color]

No, not you! There was nothing wrong with what you said Laura, it was very sweet. I meant what your Dad had to say to you and Nick you kook! :)

Not exactly uplifting words of encouragement there. I have 2 Sisters, they both already live in the U.S.. My Mom lives here. She said something equally uplifting to me the other night and I was thinking - was that a guilt thing? She isn't the advice giving kind of person and she is liberal minded and a fair person generally - so I'm thinking - whatever - and basically told her that. It's not something she hasn't said before so I said - you have told me that at least 20 times. She laughed and said she didn't know if I had been listening

It's okay, Laura. I think Trailmix was referring to what your Dad said.... not you.

And, no. You're not on your own, Modano. I get homesick too. But when I'm in Canada I get homesick for Florida. And when I'm in both places I get homesick for England. Whatcha gonna do?

The trick, for me, is not to wallow in it. I let the feeling come, I appreciate the memory, and then I remind myself of something that ticks me off about the place (or the person) to counter-balance the emotion and give me a dose of reality. Then I have a big glass of wine.

ETA: Ooops. I see Trailmix responded while I was writing. lol

Yes, you are whiney - just kidding!!!! All the upheaval would be enough to test anyones nerves. What small town in Nebraska did you live in? My Sister and co live in Fremont. We were thinking of moving there too but now we are thinking Florida (for obvious reasons :) )

We actually lived in Grand Island, NE which is about 3 hours away from Fremont. I've been there. It's a nice little town. ^_^

Your all right though. I just need to keep my spirits up. I'm with Johnny and that's all that matters. The sacrifices we make to be with our loved ones *sigh* ;) I suppose it doesn't help that my mom still cries the whole way to the airport when dropping us off to go back to the US.

Chicago is an amazing city. It's just hard to start up a conversation with people here. Everyone is going a million miles a minute! But the structures are incredible and the cultural aspect is fabulous. I'm just homesick for small town Nebraska of all places.:huh::D

Wost Airport I have been at is Newark at Xmas!! Security lines were out of control. The people that were suppose to be in control of the lines werent and people were just butting in everywhere, so frustrating!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I dunno...my personal opinion is that Atlanta is one of the worst overall, maybe because it's so darn busy. O'Hare was rough, Newark wasn't so bad, and Logan Int'l has its moments. But Atlanta...OMG. I've never liked flying out or in from there. Security can suck at times...lines are super long and for the most part staff members can be rude. Haven't had to go through customs in ATL but I've not heard too many good things about it either.

Just my 2 cents on everything mentioned above....

yes...you can whine and it's ok. I thought it was me talking to myself here at home :) Gawd I am so freaking bored waiting to start working. I feel like after 2 months off work, I'm losing some skills I can't exactly practice at home :( I feel somewhat reluctant to start looking and have found when I did that so many jobs require Security Clearance (something only US citizens can get

Washington Dulles Airport is generally great....I've been there when it's been dead and also when busy and everything seems to go like clockwork. Guess I've been lucky, but it is nicely designed. Lots of food places, bookstores and coffee....no Tim's of course :( We live about 10 mins from it, so no headaches getting there either.

Cheers folks..............it sucks to miss Canada, I find it's almost worse to call folks at home, just reminds me of how homesick I am for decent public transit, Tim Hortons and good ketchup :)

I find myself talking to the cats... Alot!:D

The first time I went to O'hare I thought was going to be the last time. I went to the McDonalds and the girl there acted like it was the most painful thing in the world for me to get Chicken McNuggets. Now I realize that she works at McDonalds, and I should not expect the greatest service, but come on now people. Don't get pissed at me because you work there! I didn't think I would ever be going to O'hare again. Little did I know that I would be moving to Chicago a year later.

Does anyone else find it odd that people still write cheques (or checks I guess) like it's going out of style. I never wrote a cheque in Canada. Very very rarely anyway. :P

We rarely write a check, using our debit card or arranging for our bills to be done by autopay. We also keep cash on us for gas and other things. However, my best girlfriend refuses to do anything BUT write a check and rarely keeps cash on her. I like the fact that the money is taken out immediately (with autopay). I don't like writing a check...takes so long for it to clear my bank. Eh, I guess it's personal preference. :)

RDU (Raleigh Durham) has to be, hands down, THE worst airport I have ever been in in my life. Well, at least the terminal I was in was. We walked over to the Popeyes and we honestly felt like we'd entered the hood. The entire terminal (including the Popeyes) was FILTHY, with the employees lounging around and generally acting (and dressing) like a bunch of hoodlums. Unbelievable.

And the cheque-writing thing just blows me away. But I'm not surprised. Their entire banking system is in desperate need of an overhaul. I'd better stop talking now. It's bringing back memories and I'm getting grumpy. I'm still trying to recover a cheque that my US bank screwed up a year ago.:blink::blush:

Yes, I've noticed the "cheque" thing here too! Amazingly, when I see people writing them they only seem to need to write the cheque and show their drivers license as ID! I think the last time I wrote a cheque in Canada, it was ONLY at a store that I was a regular at, and they knew me, and I still had to provide 100 pieces of ID it seemed. There are few debit cards here, and certainly few places that take them. Debit cards originated as an experiment in Canada, and they took off. I don't know that they did here. We basically use one credit card for most things and then pay the whole balance off once a month. As well, we seem to carry a lot of cash around as well. WAY more than I'm accustomed to!
