I am a complainer I know, but I am having a serious hard time this time around after coming back from Calgary to Chicago. I have been in the US for a little under 3 years now and I still have a hard time. I think it's worse now though since we moved from a small town in NE to a huge Megatropolis! Just when I was finally getting used to the little town life, getting a great job and building really great friendships we move. So once again I'm friendless, jobless and now home from holiday traveling and it's setting in that it kinda sucks here! :P

Does anyone else feel this way sometimes or am I just a whiney today?

I actually envy you......Chicago is one of my favorite US cities.

Give it some more time.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

Oh gosh...all the changes HAS to be depressing. Leaving Canada, the heartbreak of leaving your country, but then being with your now husband which is exciting. A small NE town (sounds dreamy) and now another huge change moving to Chicago. Gosh...I've only been there a few times, but it's HUGE, and unless you're a "city girl", you'll not find it too much fun. I HATE the traffic, and I hate big cities...so saying that, I can empathize with you. I think so much of what you're thinking has to do with just being back in Calgary for Christmas. It's okay to complain, and whine...hehe Lots of support here in the Canada forum, from people who know exactly how you feel.

Jomo's girl is right though...give it time. And until then, complain all you want!

Big Hugs,

Carla (F)

Yes, you are whiney - just kidding!!!! All the upheaval would be enough to test anyones nerves. What small town in Nebraska did you live in? My Sister and co live in Fremont. We were thinking of moving there too but now we are thinking Florida (for obvious reasons :) )

I have been here in the States 3 years as well, and I still have my days when I feel overwhelmed. Christmas in particular is difficult. So you aren't alone. :)

Chicago is my favorite city in the world. It's beautiful!

I still love Chicago. *salivates at the thought of Jay's potato chips* After seeing Chicago and Detroit as being representative of the USA, I can remember going to a few small towns like Lewiston, Me and Casper and Kemmerer. Big culture shock! Hang in there, you'll get used to it in no time. Find a niche and explore, if that doesn't work, get tickets to Jerry Springer or Oprah. Goldblatt's used to have a great Christmas display but they closed years ago. :crying:

I'm not down there yet but my family is already putting on the guilt. Last night (Nick's last night here) my dad got in this HUGE discussion all about the health care in the states and how horrible it is and "if something goes wrong, I better get my butt home for treatment"

It was humiliating and embarrassing. I know he didn't mean to alienate Nick and he's just concerned for my heath and happiness but I was so upset.

Nick already feels bad enough, he feels like he's taking me away from Canada and everything and then along comes my dad, spewing all this stuff at him. I felt horrible.

I'm sorry you are feeling alone Modano. All I can say is be thankful you are with the one you love and try to look at the good side of things.

Best of luck to you

~Laura

I've been here in the U.S. for 3 1/2 years now, and still have "down" days. It's difficult to go to Canada and see my two adult sons, my friends and favorite spots, and then return to the U.S. where I have very few friends.

I'm just thankful for the stability we have in our lives with our home in a small suburb of Seattle, a job with people that are fantastic and a lot of other things to be happy about. I could use more friends, but without having little kids, it's a lot more difficult than it used to be when I was younger.

Don't be too hard on yourself.... you've been through a lot with moving from Canada the first time, and now another move and having to start all over again. Time will make it all work out.

Best wishes.

Not exactly uplifting words of encouragement there. I have 2 Sisters, they both already live in the U.S.. My Mom lives here. She said something equally uplifting to me the other night and I was thinking - was that a guilt thing? She isn't the advice giving kind of person and she is liberal minded and a fair person generally - so I'm thinking - whatever - and basically told her that. It's not something she hasn't said before so I said - you have told me that at least 20 times. She laughed and said she didn't know if I had been listening

Oh, I'm sorry.

I meant it genuinely. Try to stay strong and look on the bright side.

I think what you're going through is entirely to be expected given all the changes you've been through! Hoping things look up for you soon; Chicago's a pretty awesome town.
