USA Passport Question

Hi,

First of all, please forgive me if I am posting in the incorrect forum. My question is about a USA Passport. The passport is set to expire in just under a year. I have a couple of Visa's to other contries in the passport, I know they are supposed to send the original passport back, but what happens if they lose it? What is the best way to renew a US Passport in this case?

Anyone with similar situation?

You could photocopy the visa pages (in fact the entire passport) and get it notarized before you send it off for renewal? I don't know if that would be acceptable at immigration of the countries for which you have Visas IF the worst should happen and your passport gets lost..at the very least it might help you to re-apply for replacements if that happened.

If you live in US then getting things notarized is easy enough.

They're not going to lose your old passport... have no fear.. just send in your old passport for renewal.. you'll get a new one in about 2 weeks..

Regarding getting the new passport in a more secure way that ensures that you get the old one back, it is possible that the regional office of the passport agency has an added fee service that gets it all done while you wait.

I've yet to hear of anyone not getting there orginal back, I know I did.

Actually in Florida that is not correct. A notary can certify some is a copy of something, as long it is not possible to get a certified copy of the document. For example, if you need to make a copy of a passport. The following is the notary block that you have to use.

FOR A CERTIFIED COPY:

STATE OF FLORIDA

COUNTY OF ________

On this _____day of _____, 20___, I attest that the preceding or attached document is a true, exact, complete, and unaltered photocopy made by me of (description of document) presented to me by the document's custodian, ______________________________, and, to the best of my knowledge, that the photocopied document is neither a public record nor a publicly recordable document, certified copies of which are available from an official source other than a notary public.
