We eat out mainly at the weekends and rarely fast food, as I cook dinner during the week and since I've been here I've still managed to put on 1 stone (14lbs) as has my husband. We went to the gym a lot more in Ireland and I also walked 2 miles in and out of work everyday...I just never thought of it as exercise.

Now that I'm pregnant, I try to walk 1 mile every day, as any form of exercise is very beneficial during pregnancy and the weather is getting much nicer...sometimes the motivation just isn't there though!

In relation to buying fresh fruit and veggies, I do find them A LOT more expensive here than in Ireland, which I found strange as America grows a lot of her own produce. The guidelines on organic produce in the U.S. are also not as stringent as in Europe, so I just buy the regular stuff.

In regards to the actual weight issue, being healthy is what is important, not numbers on a scale. I have a sister who is very obese and suffers arthritis in her knees as a result, I also have a sister who watches every single thing she eats and is miserable. So, when I refer to being healthy, I mean in both body and mind. :)

3500 calories ingested=one pound. Cut 3500 calories from your diet per week and you will lose one pound a week. Weight loss is math. Any diet that ignores the principle that you must consume less energy than you expend in order to lose weight is doomed to fail. This is basic biology; fact, not fad.

Interesting information. Need to keep that in mind for my upcoming attempts to lose weight. Thanks! :)

Excercise is also great for stress!

If I'm being good, which I havent been for a while, lol, with my excercise and do it daily for around an hour (aerobic and weight training combi) I can eat whatever I like and I don't put any weight on.

Also remember that muscle weighs MORE than fat so go by how things FIT not what the scales say.

A few things:

Super Size Me was NOT JUST about a guy eating McD's for a month straight. It talked about nutrition in children and schools...it talked about portion sizes and the history of that..and just about the poor nutrition of our nation in general.

Also....Salads CAN BE DECIEVING. With the chicken and dressing fast food salads have MORE CALS than most other things on the menu.

Ex: A Chicken Caeser Salad at Chili's (NO CROUTONS) is OVER 1000 cals. MOst restaurants dressing has over 250 cals per serving (being 2 oz.) Salads are only ok with no cheese, no croutons, no bacon bits and fat free or lite dressing (A dressing with under 100 cals per serving..and even then you can ONLY use 2 oz).

Just FYI.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Funny, I was having the "fat" discussion with my hubby last night. The only time I have ever put on weight was the three times I've carried a baby this far. After my first son was born and I tried to lose baby weight, I still weighed about 20 pounds more than I did pre-pregnancy. It didn't show because it went to other places than my tummy, kinda evened me out a little, but I knew it was there. With my second son I had toxemia and gained about 50 more pounds on top of that. When he was 3 I went on Atkins and lost 30 pounds. I'm pregnant now and have only gained 7 pounds so far, so it's not looking like I'll have as much to worry about this time. But even so I still need to lose some weight to be at my healthiest weight.

However, losing weight or not is a choice for most people. If you are not motivated to do something about it, you won't. (This excludes medical conditions so no poo throwing!) You have to work at it if your metabolism is slow. I'm lazy, I freely admit that. I'll park as close as I can to a store. I'll drive instead of walk somewhere close. So maybe I need to take my own advice and start walking more... instead of driving the kids down to the park, walk there (after the baby is born of course, there is no way I'd make it that far now :P ) things like that.

I have 2 boys. My oldest has a very very slow metabolism. My youngest can eat like a pig and stays tall and skinny just like his daddy. My oldest (11) is starting to really "pork out". We've decided to be proactive about it and we are putting him on a diet. Not restricting food but monitoring what he eats. No more soda and lots of sweets. No more eating out because we are in "too big of a hurry" to make dinner. More healthy foods. It's a good idea for all of us to eat this way, it's healthier.

HOWEVER, (and here's my point finally) I do not want to lose weight or have my family skinny because of self image.... I want to have that done because it's HEATHLY, and I think that's the bottom line here.

Interesting topic....I do think that there are a lot of overweight people in this country and it's a factor of our sedentary lifestyle, large portions, and bad eating habits....all that processed corn in our food cannot be good for us.

Edited to add that if you buy fruits and vegetables that are in season, you'll save a few bucks on your grocery bill....

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Unless it is a light weight which would, by definition, not be heavy. :P

Yes that is true....for example.....a paper weight. It is not difficult to lift, yet it has enough weight to hold down a stack of thinly sliced paper.

I also do not think that weight and wait should sound the same....it's not right.....they are like two totally different things.

I never said it was JUST about it, but surely the message that he was trying to convey is that McD's...when eaten for every meal for a month...is bad for you?!

:o I'm shocked!

OF COURSE it's bad for you!!! One thing I have to say that I hate is the lack of personal responsibility.....smokers suing big tobacco...fat people suing MaccyD's..,...it's ridiculous.

French fries are not a slim fast, and again...it's not mcD's job to govern people's weight & food choices.

I just make sure I exercise 4-5 times a week, eat as healthy as possible, and I really don't give a damn what other people think about my body.......I am totally comfortable and secure in my own skin. Women are made to think they have to live up to these expectations that are shown in magazines and on T.V. all the time and I think that is one of the problems, especially younger women have. It makes them feel very insecure about themselves, I know because I was once there. People have control over what they do and do not eat, and where they do and do not eat. As for medical problems that cause weight problems, people can't help that. They have to deal with that in the best way they can and as their doctor tells them to. The most important thing I believe when it comes to weight though is self-image and feeling secure with yourself no matter what your weight is. You have to love your body in order to help your body.
