Building credit in the US

Well now that I got my new job, I finally went to the bank to open a bank account.

Went to Chase, and surprise! They approve me automatically for a credit card with a low limit, but no need for my husband to co-sign or anything, or no need for a joint credit card. It's gonna be my very own card!

So I will be able to make small purchases and start building up my credit slowly but surely :)

Hey that's great, I have some suggestions for purchases (spring is just around the corner!):

While it's still chilly you will probably need something like this, keeps the head and ears warm:

For spring showers you might want to consider this:cat3.jpg

Enjoy!

Wonderful news and a new beginning! I guess having your own employ really helps. I'd use it, just to pay it off right away, and I'm sure that your limit will increase. If that's what you want of course.

Congrats Mephys!

Chase is a good bank to get credit with, because they also offer many store and gas cards, which you will also need to help broaden your credit file.

I suggest that let this card age for at least 6 months (that's how long it will take for you to generate a credit score) and then go for a store card like JC Penney, Walmart, or Macy's.

I have had credit since the end of July (I was lucky...I still had my Ontario licence and my parents lived at the address so I used my Canadian credit to get started and then after a few months called up Macy's, JCP, and Target and got them to transfer my SIN to SSN). Now I also have a Navy Federal Visa (thanks to Emancipation for the suggestion!) and on Christmas day I got my first online approval with Walmart!

Next on the list is an auto loan, but we're waiting until April for that.

Good luck in your credit journey!

Wahoo!! Oh man that is terrific news!! :) Congrads!!! It's hilarious how much "freedom" and "legitimacy" that little card gives you. I felt so insignificant without credit when I arrived. I'm sure that's foolish - but I Have great credit back home and enjoy all the 'benefits" as a result -and then to start all over again here, sucked hard. Anyway, great tip for those who are starting fresh! It's nice to know which banks are "kind" to us "newbies" :)

Now I also have a Navy Federal Visa (thanks to Emancipation for the suggestion!) and on Christmas day I got my first online approval with Walmart!

Now this is great news!! Glad they were generous to you as well! They seem really open to granting credit! :)

Yeah that's my plan!!! This card will have a 3% cashback bonuses on any on their top 15 list ( gas station, grocery, pet stores and vets, fastfood, etc) So I am planning on using it a lot on these little things and pay it off right away.

There was 2 options, first 6 months with no interests or immediate cashback of 50$ with the first purchase with interests immediately. So I picked the second one since I am planning on paying it off every month.
