I am flying out to America on Sunday 30th April on my K-1 Visa (woohooo) and am currently finishing up getting ready to leave the UK and tie up loose ends.

I was wondering, what should I be thinking about with regards to moving to America, what should I take with me that will be useful to me, and what do I need exactly for my POE experience.

Ive been thinking about stuff like getting medical history from here and potentially useful things like that which would be harder to aquire once im living in America.

any advice??

Hmm.

Well you might an extra long form birth certificate or two. Just for things later in life here.

You should visit your tax office (whatever you guys call it - LOL) and see about a refund (is it a P-45 or something like that)?? They can also tell you if you will be able to draw your National Insurance when you retire - later of course.

Yeah I have a spare long form birth certificate im taking with me. Didnt know you could claim your national insurance when you retire also! Thats a lonnnnng way away though, im sure I will have forgotten all about that by then!

If you have a long connecting flight in the US, buy something to eat before you go on the plane. In the US they don't feed you on the plane unless you pay for it separatedly when you're flying, and then the food is nasty too compared to European flights.

Have a good flight :D

Yes, there is a form called "Leaving the UK" from the Inland Revenue website. Fill it out and you will get all the tax back as a refund that you have paid over the last tax year. It will take several months for the refund to come but believe me, its a nice little bonus!

As for the POE all you need is that big brown envelope from the US embassy, your passport and your filled in I-94 which you will do on the plane. Cant think of anything else so wish you a safe flight and a happy new life.

February 6th 06 - AOS Interview - APPROVED

February 16th 06 - Biometrics Appointment

February 22nd 06 - EAD Approved via e mail

February 27th 06 - EAD card in mail!!!

March 6th 06 - Got a job!

March 17th 06 - Green Card Approval via e mail

March 18th 06 - 'Welcome to America' letter arrives

March 24th 06 - Green Card Arrives!

Thanks for much for the info ladybutterfly. I had no idea about this and I'm sure Nigel didn't either. I've just sent him the link so I'll be sure he fills it out. He'll be out of work for a few months until EAD comes through so any extra money is definitely great!

BTW - I'm thinking when you say 'take with you' you dont JUST mean on the plane but 'in general'?

Unfortunately I will be going easy on him! :lol: He doesn't get in till late, around 11pm, and I unfortunately have a final exam at 8am the next morning :P So I'll give him a kiss, dump him at my parents, and get to bed! :)
