I was just curious. I just recieved my EAD card and went to go apply for my ss#. They told me that I wasn't in the system yet and so he photocopied my stuff and said he'd mail it off and that they will process my card after I'm in the system. And that I should recieve it within two weeks after processing. How long of a wait is this gonna be? Has anyone had this experience where they weren't in the system yet but had their EAD card? Also, because they got my EAD card to me so late, it is only good till the end of October. I assume I will have to reapply, so do I reapply the same way I did the first time and if so should I maybe start now so that maybe I can get it on time this time around? I'm kind of irritated that they couldn't predate it to when I recieved it. By the time I get my ssn it's only going to be good for a few months. Whats the point in that :P Well , if someone, anyone, knows anything on this it would be a tremendous help. Thank you.

I might know something. LOL

When you apply for an SSN or card the offices tries to verify your status through the SAVE. Your info, i.e. name, date of birth, date of entry, could be in SAVE, but it has to show "Temporary Employment Authorized". If it has "Institute Additional Verification" they have to send a Form G-845 to immigration for manual verifcation.

It seems that the majority of the time if you have an AOS pending the EAD info, i.e. "Temporary Employment Authorized, doesn't get posted to SAVE. It also could show ""Temporary Employment Authorized", but your name or date of birth is incorrect, which would also be cause for the G-845 to be sent.

Without looking at the SAVE query there is no telling what's the problem. Now the amount of time it takes to process the G-845 and get it back to the SSA office, there is no telling. You just have to stay on top of it and make sure the SSA office follows up when they should.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, I suggest that you go back to the SSA office no more that once week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark “second request.”

You can try calling the SSA Regional Office if you have waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't seem to be concerned about following up on the G-845

Refer them to:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203740

RM 00203.740 Requesting Additional (Manual) Verification By DHS

Step 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS. Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS.

Some SSA offices have an arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated “second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15 federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays (again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the Regional Office (RO). Also report to the RO any trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.

Wow, that is alot of information, lol, and alot of following up. Thank you though. Now I just need to know when to reapply for EAD after this one expires and if I can do so now and if I do it the same way I did it the first time around.

Cangal, the same thing happened to me after I received my EAD I went to get my ssn and they told me I'm not in the system yet and they will have to check my documents and send an inquiry somewhere... I was worried, but the whole process took less than a month, I received my ssn card in the mail 3 weeks later. So hopefully you'll get your ssn soon too :)

As for EAD question usually people apply for renewal 90 days before it expires, so I think you would have to apply for it in the beginning of July.

well thats kind of a relief. Lets hope mine only takes a few weeks as well. So when I do reapply for it do I apply for it like I did the first time around?? Or is there a different procedure? And I am assuming you have to pay for a renewal.

MDYoung is the pro when it comes to social security and probably knows more about the rules and regs than most employees at SSA!

The same thing happened to me. I went into the office Feb 28th to apply and was told the same thing. Heard nothing so went back into the office on Apr 14th. Was told the verification had just come in that day so to wait another two weeks for the card to be sent. Assuming I get the card in the next week or so it will be a total of 8 weeks wait.
