The American Indians came here about 11,000 years ago and are Asian in original origan. Mongolians to be exact. But I would say that 11,000 years pretty much makes them native. Asia was populated about 50,000 years ago, so technically Asians are not native either if you want to take the argument that far.

I guess you could say the only native people are the Africans, since all of us came from there if you go back far enough (1 or 2 million years, depending on who you ask).

I've said that many times.

And No people are native to North America. Some walked here and some took boats. Now they fly. In the future they'll beam here.

My wife's been working at Macy's in the Lingerie Dept. and she received a call from a woman looking for a specific size and brand of bra. As she tells the lady that the nearest store that carries the product is out of state, the woman asks her if she is Filipino and then asks her if she knows how to read! Jinky responded with, "I'm sorry?" And the woman then asks again, only spelling the word R-E-A-D. Jinky refered the caller to her manager and then broke down in tears.

I don't understand why people think they have a right to be insulting to people who work in service type jobs. ####### does her nationality have anything to do with the conversation?

Jinky told Jhen about that and I just shook my head. I still wonder how people function in their everyday lives carrying such poison in their hearts and actually have the audacity to share that garbage with the world. I completely understand how she feels (believe me). Hopefully, she has shaken this one off, and realizes that not all folks are that way.

Lisa just brought up an interesting point... this reminds me of how much internalization of racism has occurred within some non-white members of some populations against their own members... in this very country. Go figure. For all we know the lady could've been from Manila.

Yet there is an assumption based on an obvious volume-based history here... at least implied. A very touchy subject indeed.

Thank you...yeah, I'm sat here scratchin my head that in a thread about bigotry, everyone's speaking out against it (well, that part is not confusing!), but how many times has someone here said 'hick' 'ignorant American' 'white trash' when Steven explicitly said this happened over a phone, he gave no details to the race, nationality, etc of the customer.

Completely understand. It depends where and how you look at it... historically or independently. When its independent it could be bigotry from anyone based on plain old stupidity. Historically, well, depends on the country of choice and in this country we all have plenty of history to look at one particular group of people. Assumptions can easily be made from that point on.

I for one, can't stand Neanderthals. I'm going to call my old retailer up and ask for a certain person I know still works there... and after calling him an illiterate Neanderthal I'll ask him for a Home Theater System I saw at a discount just to mess him up some more!

I feel it is a little ironic that in a thread which discusses Jinky's experience of racism/bigotry there are references to "white trash", "rednecks" and "hicks" etc.

I'm going to ask that we all steer clear of the stereotypical images of people and keep this thread respectful. Thanks.

That really sucks - I keep joking that people will love me because I am English but I am sure I will get idiots too - it is sad that it will prolly happen with people from other countries that don't have English as a first language more - I mean - at least she has a job and is working for a living which is more than some Americans can prolly say...

You get idiots wherever you go - I don't think it is restricted to the country you are in Give her a big hug from me and tell her that she should be proud of who she is and how far she has come to be with the person she loves

I've had ONE person make fun of my accent, just one in my entire time here (stuck up sorority girl, an evil look from moi soon shut her up ) 99.999999% tell me that I have a beautiful accent so Brits are lucky, as a rule.

I never lasted long in service jobs. When people got to the insult part, I would kindly remind them they are idiots. In this situation I would have ripped that women a new one.
