My wife's been working at Macy's in the Lingerie Dept. and she received a call from a woman looking for a specific size and brand of bra. As she tells the lady that the nearest store that carries the product is out of state, the woman asks her if she is Filipino and then asks her if she knows how to read! Jinky responded with, "I'm sorry?" And the woman then asks again, only spelling the word R-E-A-D. Jinky refered the caller to her manager and then broke down in tears.

I don't understand why people think they have a right to be insulting to people who work in service type jobs. ####### does her nationality have anything to do with the conversation?

My 2¢....

People (namely ignorant Americans) LOVE stereotypes, because in many scenarios, it makes analysis less brain-consuming. Unfortunately, there's enough non-English-speaking (or poor-English-speaking) immigrants to form a stereotype that "those damn foreigners don't know the language!"

Mostly, though, people would rather judge and insult than exercise empathy and understanding. And of course, everyone has something that can be insulted, whether it be nationality, age, weight, funny nose, whatever. People in service jobs are especially good targets because people believe that it's part of "their job" to put up with it. (Ugh)

Hopefully Jinky won't take stupid comments to heart for too long. I can only imagine how frustrating that must be, especially for someone who jumped through all the asinine hoops to immigrate to this country!

Sorry to here this Steven. Next time tell Jinky to ask her if she's a B-I-G-O-T.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. Tell her don't fret it. Some people are just ignorant and they believe if you have an accent that is not theirs, you must be dumb or illiterate. I have a slight accent and after living here for almost 30 years some act as if I just stepped of the airplane. Forget them

The longer it takes to introduce yourself the less you've actually accomplished

Your wife has my deepest sympathy - I am British and worked in UK for a major telecommunications provider in fault management.....I pride myself on being able to speak clear and concise english for the benefit of all the customers i ever dealt with ( i came across all nationalities and all levels of intelligence)

I once wasnt able to get the customer exactly what she wanted ...so she proceeded to criticise my english - with a lot of other insults along the way....the bizarre thing was SHE was german!

I suspect ( irrespective of nationality)some people are the same the world over - if they dont get what they want, when they want it -they become rude and will use anything to ruin everyone elses day. I suspect she picked up that your wife was not american and it was easy target for her

I can only advise that the way to look at it is to think

" I am not going to empower you so that you can make my day miserable" It took me about 3 months to get my head around this type of thing - and as the dept i worked in meant i took approx 12 calls a hour - each one usually a complaint...for a 7hour day...i learnt pretty quick to adopt the policy that as long as i had done my absolute best for each customer - then i could do no more.

Perhaps she could talk to someone where she works? I know we use to find it helpful just to vent to each other - and usually we would find some humour in it somewhere....just to take the sting out of it. It can take a while to develop a bit of a "shell" - it is unfortunate that people have to put up with this kind of behaviour - the saddest thing is people like that dont realise what effect they are having on the person they are "having a go at".

Hope your wife can find supportive attitudes from her colleagues - I am sure they can empathise - sometimes it is reassuring to know it isnt just you.

You have to run across too many people in this field to not experience bigotry or just plain rudeness. She has to accept this an know who she is and what she stands for in life. that is what matters. Not what other people think and say. She should feel sad for the lady on the phone who is obviously miserable and is lacking real joy in her life.

I'm so sorry that happened to Jinky. People are just stupid. My husband had something similar happen to him with his first job here. He was working in a grocery store and would see the same customers regularly. One day he was talking to a friend of mine that is a teacher here. Since he was a teacher in Egypt he was telling my husband what he would need to do to get started teaching here. A customer that my husband saw maybe twice a week happened to be nearby and said "What? You're a teacher? I thought you were uneducated!" Thank God he was about to control his tongue.
