Funny this is the same problem I just experienced.

I had a Net10 prepaid phone, and never had a problem using a calling card and getting Ahmed, texting him through Ipipi (an international texting service), getting calls from him, or getting his texts. I switched to a local carrier, IV Cellular, and have not been able to send or receive texts, and he is not able to call me on that phone. Needless to say, I waited too long and had to pay to have the service disconnected, and I am now back with the Net10 phone. For me, the only people who call are Ahmed and my kids. It was just not worth keeping a service that was not going to let me get through to him.

Good luck finding something that works. I was totally frustrated when the local carrier kept telling me they were checking into it, with no results. When I signed the contract for the phone, I specifically asked if they did international calls, and asked if he would be able to call from Cairo, Egypt, and they assured me if I used my calling card and texting service as I had in the past there would be no problem. They also assured me he would be able to call in. What a joke. That was an expensive lesson learned.

It cost me big, but being able to hear him when he calls is worth it. Life is just too short.

"Fun with phones" and phone service from David and Nitadyah

Cingular/ATT has had bang-up international service. Even Nit's (US) phone roams nicely over there and she will be able to stay in touch OTW over here to the US as well, their service is good at all the International hubs I have been through (Asia)

Best calling card service i found was PINGO, tried them ALL. Cost was about $5/hr to cell and $3/hr to landline and they automatically recharge our account in $20 increments from credit card. Very clear and good quality though. Every single call is logged and recorded for tracking and can easily be printed out (like for interview? hehe)

Best decision we made was to set up a V-phone with a local Texas number in Jakarta, for $25/mo. She can call any number in US/Canada for no additional charge. I can call there, it is like having a local land line in Jakarta. Provider is Vonage, and our phone bills have disappeared since we hooked that up. That one is going to stay so Nit and her fam can talk back and forth. Vonage also logs all calls in your online account (interview evidence). Quality is like talking to your neighbor, it's perfect.

Ok we're getting somewhere now. He talked to vodafone and they discovered that when I call, the calls are being routed via mobilnil, not vodafone, which is what he has. That seems to be the route of the problem. Before when I had Cingular the calls came through vodafone which meant we were on the same network which is why we had no problems. Now I have to call verizon wireless to see if this is fixable and if not I'll cancel my phone with verizon and stay with cingular until he gets here. What a pita!!

When I first looked into it it seemed too good to be true, but we've had it all set up since late October and man has that saved me a LOT.

He would need internet access at his home though for that to work. I wish!

i had verizon and i could send him messages but never received his. he had to go online to the verizon site and text me from there  . So i switched to Open Mobile, and now we both can text each other.

What is Open Mobile? I googled it but I don't see a cellular plan that you sign up for. :help:

I haven't read the whole thread but I have verizon and he has vodaphone and our msgs have gotten back and forth just fine for the past four years except for around holidays when ppl get new phones and the volume of calls is too high for the towers in the area to handle.
