so if you look like this, you couldn't possibly be involved in subversive activities. wuh9lov1.jpg

kids vacationing in disney world, old men...nothing to worry about there.

Airport screeners find loaded gun in teddy bear

"Screeners at a passenger checkpoint at the Orlando International Airport last Friday found a loaded handgun hidden inside a stuffed teddy bear belonging to a 10-year-old boy, the Transportation Security Administration has told CNN.

"We are criticized a lot for screening grannies and babies: 'Why are they checking this? My two-year old isn't a terrorist.' This underscores the need to screen everyone and everything," said Johnson.

"It's lucky that we kept it off the flight," he added, noting it could have fired mid-flight while the child was playing with the stuffed animal.

Also at that airport, screeners stopped a 67-year-old man who had hollowed out his prosthetic leg to conceal a nine-inch knife in a scabbard."

to think that if everyone was not given equal scrutiny that it would not be quickly exploited by would-be terrorists is pretty naive. and dangerous.

Excellent points. :thumbs::yes:

I really don't see the point.

Nobody ever said the USA shouldn't screen airline passengers.

The point still is that Pakistanis (and other citizens of radical Islamic laden nations) are more dangerous to the USA overall than the average Swede, Belarusian, or Pollock. All people are not equal in this regard. When was the last time you heard of a German Lutheran strapping on a bomb and blowing himself up in a crowd? Count how many times Pakistanis have done it. Get it yet?

Of course Pakistanis should get more scrutiny and should be monitored more closely than citizens of benign nations. They sure as sh*t shouldn't be given free and unfettered access into America either. Let's get real here instead of stupid. Believe it or not...the world isn't some lovefest where everyone loves everyone. Large segments of their population are hostile to America and are dangerous. Them's the facts...like it or not.

no one said that anyone said the usa shouldn't screen airline passengers. and the real point is that the average swede, belarusian, or pole (pollock are fish or an american abstract painter), like the "80 yr old swedish christian woman" you cited earlier become equal threats when someone puts a weapon or whatever in her luggage while she dozes off waiting for her plane. or a kid gets handed a teddy bear with a loaded gun inside by a stranger and a distracted parent doesn't notice. unfortunately, airline security is not an infinite resource. in the past couple years, the us has cut thousands of screener jobs from us airports. no one in the airline industry or congress seems to be really interested in providing the funding required to give extra scrutiny in the manner you describe without there then being gaps and holes in the screening of everyone else. and that's very, very dangerous. the 67 year old man with the knife in his prosthetic leg was not discovered through just the standard screening everyone goes through. there are also clues in behaviour and demeanor that need to be closely monitored for, that with security resources what they are now, cannot be as effectively monitored for if security's pre-occupied with nationality. all cleaned up, a john walker lindh type could easily pose as a benign american lutheran.

(secretly hoping CIS doesnt find out my great-great-great-great grandfather was some sort of a Scottish pirate who by family legend somehow snatched a good english girl, took her as his wife, and had a long happy marriage <and 6 children>) That might be misinterpreted...............

key word. who currently is?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

The first time I travelled to America I was selected for additional screening at Detroit and the woman looked at me funny because I was frightened of the machine that blows air on you (what is that anyway? nobody explains anything to you when you're in that situation) and I gave her an incredulous look and told her I was frightened because I didn't know what it was doing - they just pulled me to one side and asked me to go through an extra stage with no explanation of what was going to happen - which is scary if you've never been through it before!

I have no idea if it was just at random or because I have curly auburn hair and pale skin and probably look like I might be Irish *shrugs* but being singled out is not nice.

My thought on international travel is that all countries need to have health screening, tougher border control, and check the background of people applying for visas. Until they can get a grip on this worldwide there seems little point in stretching finite resources further to more heavily scrutinise someone just because of their place of birth. Either the security and screening measures in place are adequate for detecting threats or they aren't - and it would be wrong to penalise a whole country full of people for the actions of a minority. ANYONE whose activity gives cause for alarm should be investigated on an individual basis.

Huckabee Wants Women To Be Submissive

'Take Nation 'Back For Christ'

POSTED: 8:41 am PST December 31, 2007

UPDATED: 10:15 am PST December 31, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mike Huckabee, a Republican relying on support from religious conservatives in Thursday's hard-fought presidential caucuses, on Sunday stood by a decade-old comment in which he said, "I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."

In a television interview, the ordained Southern Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor made no apologies for the 1998 comment made at a Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Salt Lake City.

"It was a speech made to a Christian gathering, and, and certainly that would be appropriate to be said to a gathering of Southern Baptists," Huckabee said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He gave the speech the same year he endorsed the Baptist convention's statement of beliefs on marriage that "a wife is to submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ." Huckabee and his wife, Janet, signed a full-page ad in USA Today in support of the statement with 129 other evangelical leaders.

The former governor, who rallied Christian evangelicals to make him a surprise force in Iowa, has put his faith front and center in his campaign. His stump speech sounds like a pastor's pitch from a pulpit. Campaign ads emphasize faith and call him a Christian leader. He frequently quotes Bible verses.

As his fortunes have improved, Huckabee has faced a drumbeat of questions and criticism about his gubernatorial record and the role of faith in his administration. He also has made some missteps while trying to fend off a challenge -- and critical TV ads -- from Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and Mormon whose faith unsettles some religious conservatives.

Four days before the caucuses Thursday, a new poll found Huckabee's surge may have stalled; his once double-digit lead over Romney has evaporated. Private polling shows the two in a dead heat.

The television interview was Huckabee's only campaign appearance Sunday.

With the media throng following him having grown immensely, Huckabee scrapped a public event at a church in favor of attending a private service closed to reporters. Instead of courting voters, he hunkered down to film new TV ads, perhaps spots responding to Romney's barrage of critical commercials.

As recently as Friday, Huckabee insisted he wanted to run a positive campaign. He also reserved the right to respond aggressively.

Those skeptical of the role of faith in his presidency, he said, should look at his record in Arkansas.

"I didn't ever propose a bill that we would remove the Capitol dome of Arkansas and replace it with a steeple," he said. "You know, we didn't do tent revivals on the grounds of the Capitol."
