The only real downside to where I live is the chronic lack of affordable housing coupled with below national average wages - which was one of several factors that made the decision to move to be with Mark rather than him coming here much more sensible.

That's exactly the situation we find ouselves in as well...I can make much more as a 13-year veteran teacher here than uprooting myself to move to Devon...although living in England is an intriguing thought....

*sigh* Living in England has been pretty brilliant (second only to living in Ireland, which rocked so hard it's unbelievable) and I don't think we would have gone through all of this hassle if it hadn't been for my mom's ill health. Even given the fact that we'd not be able to crack the property market until we inherit, I still loved living here.

I am going to miss London pretty hard - almost as hard as I miss Dublin!

I am the USC, but after 10 years away I found it harder than I thought to adjust to life back in the USA. Especially when I expected that much higher standard of living - even though I am earning a lot more money, I'm still not feeling it. Getting used to reduced holiday entitlement (I went from 27 days to 10) was the hardest thing of all.

Still, it has been really good to be back. I just wish I could combine the best things of both countries (with all my favorite people) in one place. I would never leave!

On a side note: Anyone else have problems ordering water in the US? That's the only hurdle I've encountered on my visits. My requests for water were not understood in five separate restaurants - and one lady even asked if I'd said 'lemonade'. I have no problem ordering anything else, and my accent isn't that obtuse! (I have a Sussex/London accent).

Water... Lemonade... hmmm - no I still can't find any similarity in pronunciation!! I find it is pronounced more like "wodder" in SoCal

Ok - so how many people living in the US now have picked up some of the accent so they have a UK/US hybrid?!!?

I am determined not to pick up a US accent though I appreciate I may have to use some of their words in order to be understood. The midwest doesnt have a strong accent so they say but having have to say "Burger" 3 or 4 times to his sister and ask for "Randy" at his work at least 5 times before I'm understood is frustrating. The main thing is that Randy understands me, he can be my interpreter.

Hahahaha :D Jeremy's English accent sounds gay - literally he actually sounds really camp!!! I noticed when I was out there I started to pick up a bit of the drawl but it changed back the second I stepped on the plane :D

Jeremy will prolly have to interpret for me too :P

By the end of my Christmas visit I had Alex's mother saying 'herb' with an 'h' and Alex's dad saying 'boot' instead of trunk! :D On the other hand, I've grown used to saying pants instead of trousers, freeway instead of motorway, and as my family would tell you I say 'awesome!' way too much. My pronunciation of 'garage' is also halfway between the British and the American pronunciation.

I can't say it here, but I also swear a lot more than I used to and that's mostly Alex's influence. Mind you, it's also partly the Yorkshire influence. Growing up in the south no one ever swore, but it seems that in Yorkshire and California it's almost impossible to complete a sentence without the f-word in it.

I can see myself picking up many more American words and probably a slight accent. However, there are some words and pronunciations I absolutely refuse to try and learn! Aluminum, and the pronunciation of tomato and herb, for example.

Good luck with those. I guarantee Americans will NOT get it.

No - I have found they are ok with tomato... You say tomahto and the people I have met kinda giggle and spend about half an hour trying to imitate it  aluminum is not something I will say, not will I say "erb"... But there are some words - pants, freeway, diaper... anything for an easy life ;) Esp with Jeremy's aunt as she is a little naive - very sweet but like a 52 year old kid  OH! ANd I will NEVER use the word fanny to describe my behind

You say 'tomahto' and they say, 'ooh, ooh, do you say 'potahto' too?'

Then you say, 'nope, they just needed something to rhyme with tomahto in the song' and they look all disappointed ;)

I haven't picked up anything buy vocabulary off Pete. I tend to say bin instead of garbage can, and its caused some confusion at work, but that's life. I've noticed a tendency to use 'reckon' on occasion, as well as occasionally ringing someone, instead of calling them, but that's just occasionally.

I can't even imitate his accent very well, its just a very clipped northern accent and I just can't seem to do it, though Pete loves to poke a bit of fun at my new york accent.

"Oh, Cassie (my cat) is very sawwwwwft is she?"

I had to order for Pete at the bar during my Christmas party. He requested a beer and got. "I'm sorry, sir, a what?' the first three times. (it was actually pretty funny).

I still have my regular New-York-but-not-quite accent that I've always had...It's funny, being from NY but being raised in FL...both NYers and Floridians both can tell I'm not 'from there'....I say cawfee and mawl and wawk...but it's subtle and not so obvious as a lifelong NYer. My mother (a tried and true NYer) doesn't have much of an accent whatsoever...being on Wall Street, she worked on her pronunciation years ago so that the accent is really minimal.

I was bound and determined to not pick up any accent or anything like that when I lived with D....after about a year or so, the slang crept in grrrrrrrr. The first time I said 'nowt' the whole pub cheered...lolz it was funneh. Hrmm, I think that was the first word...now I'm not sure, heh. The whole 'nowt' 'owt' origin still doesn't make much sense, but I guess it is what it is.

I struggled a lot trying to understand the ppl there...there are many old time pityakkers (sp?) that had such accents I couldn't understand them at all. Can't tell you how long it was me yelling 'MY NAME'S NOT BONNIE' at peeps before I understood what it was they were sayin, hahahaha.

It has been hard trying to break the habit of the slang...I'm in no way all 'haweh, Ahm gan yem' (D doesn't even speak like that) but it will sneak in  I've been back here for a while now, and I still use it regularly. D and the friends I talk to from there obviously understand it, but I see Americans get that puzzled look on their faces when I slip up.
