An adult bald eagle that flew into a utility line in Plumsted, Ocean County, last week has died.

Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Elaine Makatura confirmed the eagle's death today.

The bald eagle was chosen in 1782 as the emblem of the United States of America, because of its long life, strength and majestic looks. The U.S. bald eagle population declined alarmingly during the first half of the 20th century, and the bird is still considered endangered in New Jersey.
