I'm leaving for the US on Saturday and even though I've gone through US customs many times, I have a question concerning their food guidelines. I thought it would be nice to invite my friends to sample some European cheeses which I would like to bring; I know you can buy European cheese in the US but it's horribly expensive and the stores where I live don't have a very good selection. Does anyone know if cheese is allowed? If so does anyone have experiences transporting cheese? Any idea where I can find their specific guidelines?

Well I brought a whole bunch of stuff from my trip back with me. I had it in my carry on. No one ever asked to see a thing. I am a USC but I was watching non-USCs going through the line. I did not see anyone getting carry on bags inspected. I went through JFK.

Now, of course, if you are bringing several wheels of cheese. I might think of leaving them in luggage. If they get confiscated then oh well. If not... all the better!

I think there are rules about unpasterized cheese is there not??

The answer is it depends.. Hard cured cheeses such as cheddar and parsean are admissible.. soft cheese such as brie, ricotta, feta, mozzerella are not...

So which is it.. soft or hard..

Well, it's both, but I can still decide not to bring the soft cheese even though it's so tasty. So it is ok to declare the cheese on the customs card?

The odds are that unless you're bringing in tons and tons of it that CBP won't even notice... But yes.. you should declare the cheese..

I wouldn't chance bringing it in a carry on. I got picked out in Detroit and they inspected EVERYTHING. The guy put on gloves and went through ALL my clothes, papers, pictures, and the whole bit.

I once had a mango "seized" from my handbag when I landed in LAX! At that time, there were more officers with dogs patrolling the arrivals. A little dog sniffed and stopped near me without me even noticing. Then the officer asked me to open my bag and he just took away my mango :crying: …. No big deal though. I wasn't given a fine or anything. I thought the incident was kind of funny, actually. The dog got all excited when the officer gave him a candy or something! :D

Recently, I haven't seen many officers with dogs at the airport. I suppose that these training dogs are now too busy detecting more dangerous materials.

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....
