I was not sure where to put this post, so hopefully I am in the right neighborhood. My Fiancé just arrived here on Christmas day, and we are planning on getting married tomorrow. I just want to make sure we are pointed in the right direction before we go any further. Here are a few questions I have:

Are we supposed to apply for her Social Security Card Before or After we get married?

Is there anything else that needs to happen or is there anything else we are supposed to do before we get married?

Do we file for AOS immediately after we get married, or do we just have to make sure we file for it before the K-1 would have expired?

When is the right time to apply for EAD and Advance Parole? (I am active Duty Military and we will be leaving for Guam in May)

Any help you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.

You can apply for the social security card before or after the wedding, that's really up to you. Although I've heard that some couples had a hard time getting the SS card in the married name for women since they are registered by USCIS under their maiden name on the visa.

Make sur you have the wedding license and the documents needed for it (sometimes they ask for a SS # in which case you need to explain to them or get a letter or something to waive it).

As long as you are married within the 90 days of arrival you can file whenever you feel like it. The earlier the better but some people wait for a year sometimes to do it, it's not a problem.

You apply for the EAD and the AP with the AOS application (no extra cost that way).

Read the AOS papers and make sure you have everything you need for the various forms.

Good luck and Congratulations.

Apply for her SSN before you guys get married... but wait a couple more days before you go to the office to make sure that USCIS has updated the system and people at the social security office will be able to find her in the computer. Change the name on the social security card later on, when she received her EAD or permanent resident card.

You file for AOS after your marriage. There is no time frame on when to file, all you have to do is get married within 90 days after she entered the country. But of course, the sooner you file, the better, so she can become a permanet resident.

Send AP with your AOS application, it's included in the fee and you should receive the document before May.

Guam is a US territory, will you be stationed there? You don't need AP then, if the military moves you and your wife there on orders, it will be considered US.

It might be US territory, but when coming back to the US you have to go through immigration at the airport, therefore I would think it's best to have the AP. The fees are included anyway so it can't hurt to fill in the papers like they planed to.

I totally agree.

I was just curious, if he goes there on military orders and stays for a while she will most likely receive her Greencard while they are down there.

If you got married before applying for the SSN you should be able to take the marriage certificate to the office with the imigration paperwork and get it done in the married name. Wouldn't that be easier than changing it after the green card?

We also tried to go to the SS office yesterday for my husband and he's not in the system yet. He arrived the 20th. They told me to come back in 10 days as it never gets put in before that... I think the lady just hates her job  So you might want to wait a week before going.

Oh, and I changed my name yesterday too. They just asked for the marriage certificate and it was done  so I'm guessing it should work if you have the certified copies...
