Told us two weeks to get visa...

My husband had his visa interview on November 26th. We expected that to be the last step and that we would be issued the visa after that, but we were surprised when they told me that I had to send them "proof of domicile." They gave me a paper listing all the things I could send them as proof and told me that I had to send at least four of the things on the list. We were told that after we sent the papers they would send the visa within two weeks. We have been waiting for a month now and all they will tell us is that our case is "being reviewed." Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know how long it will actually take to get the visa?

Here is the list of "Proof of Domicile" and what I sent to them:

1. Establishing an address in the US

2. Setting up and maintaining bank accounts in the US

3. Transferring funds to the US

4. Making and maintaining investments in the US

5. Seeking employment in the US

6. Applying for a social security number

7. Voting in local, state, or federal elections

8. Enrolling children in schools

9. Paying US income taxes

10. Taking steps to relinquish residency in a foreign country

I sent them a copy of my driver's license, social security card, my bank statements, phone bills, student loan bills, emailed job offers from employers, my return plane ticket, my income taxes from 2004 to 2006 and a notarized letter from my parents saying that my husband and I will live with them when we get back to the states. Do you think this is enough proof? Do I have to have a job for my husband to get the visa even though I have joint sponsors?

Unfortunately Cairo tells everyone bullsh!t timelines for when they'll get their visa. My husband interviewed Jul 29 and was told between 1 and 2 months. We're going on 5 months soon. Some were told 3 weeks and waited 8 months. you are in ap hell. Fasten your seatbelts and be prepared to know nothing until the visa is in hand. One day at a time is my suggestion.

They seem to have a make-it-up-as-they-go-along approach. Water is right, no rhyme nor reason, and Bridget nailed it....fasten your seatbelt.

Sooner or later, though, you will be scheduled to be blessed, so stay hopeful and encouraged in the meantime.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

IO think you have established "proof of domicile" in the US if you have driver's license with US residential address, 2004 to 2006 tax returns, bank statements.....That should be enough.

It may be that your case is in Administrative Processing.....

AP comes after the interview when they take fingerprints and send them back to the US to check in their databases.

AP is not always about security checks as our case has never been sent to DOS for checks

our security checks have been done for a few months now. Cairo won't tell you what their admin processing is at all.

Thanks to all that replied. I would like to note that (I think) we are the first ones on this site that filed at the embassy after the laws changed in January 2007. We were required to wait six months before applying for the visa so we've already been waiting nine months. The first part of our process once we applied went really fast, but now it's stopped. I'm just wondering if it should make a difference that we applied after the new laws came into effect.

Is there some kind of legal action we can take to speed up the process? I've already contacted my Senators and Congressman, but they can't force the embassy to do anything.

I think the fact yo lived with your husband 6 months should help your case, but just like when you file the K1 , the clock does not start till the interview.

Cairo isn't the only embassy to pull this stunt. We had our interview on Oct 17, 2007 in Germany (yeah, you think EU never does this stuff!)... were put on AP... they didn't even ask for more evidence, they don't want any more documents from us, told us a month, and we are still waiting... its sickening just the not knowing... i feel for you! its not just MENA who goes through the AP BS
