Hey all,

I know there have been many posts at this site about the way people in OVIR spell passports. But here is what I am dealing with right now. I married in the U.S. to an American citizen and came back to Russia and changed my name to husband's name. We filed for IR spouse visa and spelled my name in English the way it is in our Marriage certificate and his passport. That was in August. Now when I went to OVIR to apply for my new zagran passport they said that my last name will be spelled absolutely different from what it is in my husband's passport or marriage certificate.

I was told to send a letter to Moscow FMS and to state my reasons to spell it the way it is in my English documents and not the way their automated program does it.

Anyway I am sending a letter with supporting documents today and hope I get a permission. People at local FMS here said it was done before. I hope for the best.

What are the outcomes of last name in I-130, Marriage certificate and passports not matching one another?

What you list on the I-130 is what will appear on your green card.

Whatever your Russian papers say is good for the Russian govt. The U.S. govt. will recognize you in your new (I-130) applied for name once you've been updated in the system.

The main thing is that the numbers match, not the spelling of the names. Your passport number remains the same no matter if your name is spelled with an extra y or e or an ae or whatever.

Thank you! It is good news. I can't even express how much trouble I had when they issued me a new passport and changed my name from evguenia to evgeniya while I was in the US. I couldn't get driving license bz my visa said yevgeniya, my SS# evguenia and my new passport evgeniya. HA ha hahaaaa! So this is my story. I just didn't want to deal with this mess once again.

What a bunch of retards! No matter how your name is spelled (or misspelled!) your ID number is always the same.

So if you drove without a license and were to be pulled over by the police, how could they even identify you and charge you..... it's like you didn't exist!
