My conditional permanent residency expires on January 31st 08 and I am preparing my I-751 application. Having read some posts in this forum I notice references to getting another copy of your SS card without the 'VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION' once you get your Green Card. I never realised you could do this and so I still have my original SS card with that statement on it so I have a few questions please:

1) Is my SS card with that message on it still valid?

2) Is there any point in applying for a new card with my conditional residency due to expire at the end of next month?

3) Any idea what my employment status is (regarding my current SS card); I have been employed by my company for 21 months now?

Sorry for the questions but I couldn't see this specific query in the FAQ.

Thanks for your help.

1) Is my SS card with that message on it still valid? Yes - the card/number is issued for life.

2) Is there any point in applying for a new card with my conditional residency due to expire at the end of next month? No - I'd just wait until you get the new card.

3) Any idea what my employment status is (regarding my current SS card); I have been employed by my company for 21 months now? Your employment status is not based on your social security card, it is based on your status - if you have your LPR, you're authorized to work. As you will be when you get your new 10-year card.

I see from your timeline that your infopass was in Philly, so I presume you live in PA.

When Richard went for his PA D/L with the SS card with the message, they only gave him a D/L with an exp date that match the exp of his EAD.

So...when he got his green card it was off to SS office and they issued a new card with NO restrictions and he was able to get an unrestricted D/L.

So for him it was all about the D/L.

Hi bettenan,

Yes I live in PA, however when I got my D/L in December of 2005, they gave me a 4 year one - expires 09/25/2009. My EAD expiry date was, I think, March of 2006. My D/L was issued by the Cressona Dept Of Motor Vehicles. I've had my SS card since July of 2005 so it seems I got lucky with the D/L.

Hi Linda & Dave...

So much for consistency. Not too many pleasantries at the D/L center in these parts...and they made sure Richard could not drive when his EAD expired. Of course it was no problem, Green Card and new SSN came before that and his new d/l that expires was issued with exp of 2010.

I never got around to getting a new card... the number is still valid, it's just a convenience to update it. If you're not working, it really doesn't matter.
