Ok a few quick questions.

First off, am I to understand that the NOA that we received in the mail after filing for removal of conditions..is what we are to show to prove we're "in the system???" What I mean is, my hubbys temp green card runs out in Feb. So the date will make it look as if he's not "cough Legal".

Where I expect to run into trouble is with the DMV. His DL expires this spring, and going by past experiences with them, they have no freaking clue what immigrations all about. They don't have a Clue!! So he will show them this piece of paper, and they're suppose to understand what it means and allow him a new DL? He's very worried about this...

Second. If he would fly to the UK, is this the paper he would show to prove his residency? Does he have to have this NOA in his pocket at all times? How Inconvenient!!!

Anyone know? Esp anyone from NJ?

Hi and Merry Xmas,

From my understanding the NOA should be suffice for the DMV. The DMV should essentially extend his drivers licence for another year or until he receives his 10 year greencard. As for traveling abroad he would have to carry the NOA along with his expired greencard. What you may want to do is get an infopass to see if they will stamp his passport extending his greencard for another year. Hope this helps,

Lissa

It all depends on who you get at the DMV. Some will only accept an unexpired green card,, while others will accept the NOA. Hopefully you will have some luck and get someone who can read the extension letter for what it is.

Well thats why I wondered if we had any NJ posters. From our experience, the DMV has No clue what anything means, immigration wise. They will probably refuse to renew his license..which has us worried. PITA!

And does he have to carry the NOA in his pocket at all times to prove he is in status?

So again, are there any NJ posters here in our situation?

I can't really answer your question BUT did hear some bigwig from the NJ DMV on the radio while I listening to NJ 101.5 who made a point of saying that they code the NJ D/L special to indicate that the driver is not a citizen. SO I would think they would be experts on these matters.

My advise is if you get no satisfaction from DMV see your State Rep or State Senator, they should be able to help you.

I will say the PA DMV was pretty crappy overall but in the end when Richard got his 2 year green card they gave him a four year d/l.

Good luck....

Whether other people in NJ have problems or don't have problems with the DMV doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the same experience. I don't think you can generalize to that level.

For example, my wife had all kinds of trouble in Virginia, which is notorious for not accepting anything other than a valid green card. I've seen other posts however that indicated that people had no problem whatsoever getting their license renewed in VA with a NOA. It all depended on which office they went to and which DMV agent they happened to get.

Bottom line is that you're just going to have to try your luck.
