New Jersey Residents: Is Newark "Investment Worthy"?

I worked in Newark for several years before moving to Albuquerque last winter, and yeah, Newark is definitely on its way up. There still aren't many parts of it that I'd live in (or even go to at night), though. But I'd totally walk around the downtown area during the day and go shopping and stuff (and have).

I've known plenty of people who went to law or med or other grad school at Rutgers Newark and came out fine. You're fine if you either (1) live on campus and don't leave or (2) commute daily from somewhere else.

The Ironbound is one of the few places I'd go at night, but I wouldn't live there. NJPAC (Performing Arts Center) is amazing but I don't recall any condos near it. There are nice condos in University Heights near NJIT/Rutgers/Superior Court but I'd be afraid to venture outside the gated area.

...Newark is definitely on its way up.

I suppose there always comes a point when up is the only way a city can go. The way I remember Newark from a few years back, that city was at or near that point.

*shrugs* My father has worked there (at Rutgers-Newark) since 1997, and he absolutely loves it.

BTW, if I've never mentioned it, your daughter is the cutest baby ever.

Quite possible. I'm sure that there are places far worse than Newark. I'v been there a few times back in 2000/2001 and I somehow failed to be attracted to the place. Just not my cup of tea. None of the places up there, really.

Aww, thanks! Her daddy really likes to hear that.

This region is most definitely an acquired taste.

Gupt, no one develops a taste for crime and human degradation. The question is: will Newark have a true renaissance?

This is a tough question because there have been decades of government corruption, neighborhoods that are strictly poor Black, and urban flight by the very people who could turn Newark into a safe and vibrant city (and not just near the Performing Arts Center).

If real estate is all about "location, location, location," then Newark is due for a change, just by it's proximity to New York City, where all the jobs are. But it needs a major overhaul, and that takes time.

Personally, I am very interested in watching the real estate values in Newark, not just as an investment, but as a place to live as well. Then again, I have always been certifiable.
