My wife and I are traveling to China in 2/2008. Her passport is in her maiden name, her green card is in her married name (only last name is different).

Our petition is K1; she is a conditional resident now.

We have our marriage license with us. Will she run into any problem with the custom in China and US?

What is your experience with this type situation?

Many thanks

It's best to get her passport changed at a Chinese Consulate in the US. Otherwise, you should be ok if the ticket is in the name on her passport and you carry passport, green card, and marriage certificate.

This is a very frequent question that comes up.

You book airline tickets in the name in the passport, carry a copy of marriage cert if any questions arise.

You can get married name appended to passport at any Chinese consulate in the USA, or back in China at passport office.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

My wife also has a passport in her maiden name, but filed for AOS in her married name. She tried to get the passport changed at the consulate. But the best they could do was to add a handwritten notation (in spanish of course, and not dated but stamped) saying that her marriage was recorded at the consulate. It gives her new name as her previous name plus the suffix "de my-last-name". She file for AOS with simply first+my-last-name.

So a few of questions for anyone who's been through this:

Which name is safer to use for airline ticketing?

Will the fact that the name change is handwritten and undated cause any problems? (of course, the whole passport is hand written so maybe not)

Will the notation cause problems if she uses tickets in the maiden name?

Is it at US airports or non-US airports where problems might arise?

Can you do that at any country's consulate? Might be a stupid question but do all of them usually kind of "update" your last name on the passport? I didn't know that was possible

Canada used to do it until June 2007. But only if the passport name was in the same name as the birth certificate. Now you have to be issued a whole new passport.

Don't know about any Consulate, but the Brazilian Consulate hee in Houston will change the name in the passport with marriage certificate and her birth certificate (as long as her BC was received within the past 6 months). We'll be doing just that in the next couple weeks.
