Sorry, kid. You gotta get up early to beat me when it comes to cultural norms. I know a little bit about the subject.

Teehee.

Sorry, Granny. You gotta lay off the elderberry wine if you want to come with your "A" game.

The dictionary is not the vanguard of culture; it is, in fact, a lagging indicator. Get to know the common folk, WOM.

Not sure what you're reading, but the dictionaries I use are updated every year. New additions for 2007 include words such as "crunk" and "ginormous" and lots lots more from the "vanguard of culture" and the "common folk." So I think they've caught up with Groundhog Day which has been around since the 1800s.

Or are you now going to try to argue that it just became a "holiday" this year ?

Anyway, I asked you to find some people who *seriously* consider Groundhog Day to be a "holiday." You presented the following list of links. Unfortunately for your argument, it seems you didn't look at them very closely.

Let's go through your lame links, one by one....

1. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This page is titled "Holiday: Groundhog Day." But check out the other pages they have listed for "holidays" and oh my goodness lookie here -- "Holiday: Birthdays." I guess this proves that everyone's birthday is a holiday now. LMAO. Next.

2. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Who knows a hoilday better than Hallmark Cards?

Actually, Hallmark is not the expert on *holidays*; it's the expert on *selling cards* -- and for any possible occasion. They'd call Dog Catcher Day a holiday if they thought people might buy a card for it.

Allow your eyes to drift to the left side of this page and peruse Hallmark's entire list of so-called "holidays" -- it includes such occasions as "Administrative Professionals Day," "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," "National Boss Day," and........ "Tax Day" (now who the heck celebrates that ???) LMAO. Next.

3. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This is site called "John's ESL Holidays." I have no idea who "John" is, but if you check out his home page, he writes:

Did you know there are only nine legal holidays celebrated in the United States? On legal holidays, businesses, schools and government offices close. Since most legal holidays fall either on a Thursday or Friday, that means people who work in those sectors of the business community all get a long weekend.

Only 9 legal holidays in the U.S. ?????? And most legal holidays fall on a Thursday or a Friday ?????

Obviously, John doesn't know sh!t from shinola. (But maybe you can now try to argue that Groundhog Day is one of those "illegal holidays".... ) LMAO. Next.

4. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This authority lists "Back to School" as one of the "holidays." LMAO. Next.

5. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This is a webpage from Target referring to something called "Groundhog Day (Holiday Books)" by Janie Spaht Gill - no synopsis or picture available... impossible to determine what that is. Next...

6. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This is a website titled simply "Groundhog Day" that looks like a promotional page for Punxatawney, Pennsylvania, but it has no information about who writes it and it gives a contact address in Anaheim, California. Anyway, this page repeatedly calls Groundhog Day a "tradition" and a "celebration," but doesn't use the word "holiday" until the last paragraph, with this caveat:

Yes, Groundhog Day may not be a serious holiday such as Memorial Day, Martin Luther King Day or Veteran's Day, but Groundhog Day is surely one of the most fun-filled holidays of our time.

LMAO. Next...

7. Holiday: Groundhog Day

This one's called "Kids' Turn Central." Click on the link for "Holidays" at the top of the page. The main index is actually titled "Holidays/Occasions," and it also includes "Leap Year," "Graduation," and "Summer." LMAO. Next...

8. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Fact Monster - now this was not as laughably ridiculous as your other links -- it was much more careful. But do click on the link for "Holidays" at the top of their page. You will see that this site considers "April Fool's Day" to be a "holiday." LMAO. Next...

9. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Big Dates.com (another site that's trying to sell cards.) It lists "Groundhog Day" under "Holidays," but if you read the description, it calls this day a "traditional festival." Tellingly, also listed under "Holidays" are "Nurse's Day" and (again) the beloved "Tax Day." LMAO. Next...

10. Holiday: Groundhog Day

If you click back on the link to "Holidays," you will see that this site's main list is called "Holidays and Special Events Center."

Also included: "Dental Health Month," "Popcorn Month, "Fall," and what has to be my personal favorite, "Mole Day" (who knew that moles had their own day of honor ?!!) LMAO. Next...

11. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Preschooleducation.com, eh ? This site actually refers to it as "Groundhog's Day" and also thinks "April Fool's Day" is a holiday. Discover the fun in learning ! LMAO. Next...

12. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Wishafriend.com Aaaaaaaand again, focus your eyes on the left side of the page. According to this site, "Friday the 13th," "Winter," and "Daylight Savings Time" are all holidays, too. LLLLLLLLMAO. Next....

13. Holiday: Groundhog Day

123 holiday.net. Yep you know the drill by now -- go to the "Holiday Menu" page on this site and you will see more of the same NON-holidays -- including "Secretary Week," "World Aids Day" (I think they mean AIDS but then again maybe not) and "Sweetest Day."

14. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Yahoo Greetings. On the left in the list of "holidays" are -- "Celebrate Winter," "Pulaski Day," "Holi," "Celebrate Spring," "Celebrate Summer," "Women's History Month," "National Volunteer Week," and "Celebrate Fall." LMAO. Next....

15. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Answers.com. Main list of "holidays" includes -- "Super Bowl Sunday." LMAO. Next....

16. Holiday: Groundhog Day

Earthcalendar.net. This one is the most hilarious of all. Their main list of "USA holidays - 2008" includes "Trivia Day," "The King's Birthday (ELVIS)," "King's Death (Elvis)," "National Pharmacist Day," "National Pig Day," "Pi Day" (don't get all excited now Jenn!), "Skyscraper Day," "National Tartan Day," "Rubber Eraser Day," "Save the Rhino Day," "National Tap Dance Day," "Talk Like a Pirate Day"..... it just gets more and more absurd. LMAO.

What a complete exercise in futility for you. Obviously, these websites are simply posting laundry lists of selected holidays *AND* special occasions/events/commemorations. None of them are seriously claiming that Groundhog Day is anything other than an annual fun event or occasion -- not at all the same thing as a "holiday."

I could do the same with Valentine Day, but it's too easy.

Well, picking "Groundhog Day" to try to prove a point about how Americans have "bastardized" the idea of the "holiday" was your mistake, not mine.

I said businesses were open on the 4th of July, and that's true. You are the one who added government offices and banks. Still, business' closing is not the measure of the making of a hoilday, nor of its legitimacy.

Actually, *this* is what I said:

By definition, a "holiday" is either a religious holy day or a day in commemoration of an event or person, and which is marked by a general cessation of work. (Of course, in British use, "holiday" can mean simply "vacation.")

So an example of a "secular holiday" in the U.S. would be Independence Day -- or President's Day, Veteran's Day, etc. -- where businesses generally close and people have the day off from work.

You mistook "businesses generally close" to mean the same thing as "all businesses always close," and posted:

Apparently, what they do where you live is not the same as what they do in anywhere I've lived. In the world I live in businesses do not close for 4th of July, and Groundhog day and Valentine's Day are referred to as holidays. Wikipedia, the encyclopedia created by the common folk agrees with me.

So *that's* where I had to break it down for you:

If banks, government offices and *most* non-retail businesses are open on the Fourth of July in Colorado (or anywhere else in the U.S.,) I will eat my hat. Most full-time non-contract employees will get either a paid day off work, or if they *do* work on the holiday, most will be paid "holiday pay" -- time and a half or even double time. Certainly not the case on Groundhog Day or Valentine's Day.

Thanks for the laughs, and have a great New Year's HOLIDAY !
