I am not sure what difference it makes whether or not one has a visa if you can move around without being able to find someone to actually even check your passport. Just my own personal experience of having to go out of my way to find anyone to stamp my passport in Europe. It did seem odd to me that the only place I actually was forced to get a stamp was when I returned to the US.

I don't know about getting a visa ahead of time, but I (USC) changed my status to a residence permit in Greece based on my marriage to a UKC who was 'resident' there. There was quite a bit of confusion over what Brits need to do to live there legally--at minimum they must register for a permit with the police (a $5 affair). I got a 5 year 'green card' (that's what they call it casually) that allows me to live/work in Greece.

You can pretty much expect that you will only get your passport stamped entering or leaving the Schengen zone, but not travelling between member countries. It's like travelling domestically in the US.

There wasnt anyone around to stamp it when I came into Schipol. I had to leave the airport to get a stamp. I had been directed to the gate where my connecting flight was (I actually went there before leaving the airport) and at no point between the 2 was there someone to even look at my passport.
