What on God's Green Earth has the Schengen Visa to with the Fox's question?

The query clearly starts: "If you live..." and not "If you visit...".

ET take a deep breath. Sadly, this is just only another example of your 1,000,000 senseless posts on VJ. You are a campus NUTCASE! Your opinion always lacks credibility, IN MY OPINION. I am certainly not an expert in immigration to the EU but my arguments are always sensible. However, your arguments are never based on facts, rather misinformed opinions. Generally, it has been my experience that when I am accused of being insensible, it is because someone misinterpreted smartassery. Either way, I cannot claim to know it all, and if someone sets me straight with facts, I will always concede.

As far as I know, Fox doesn’t live in EU yet. I’m not sure about other places, but in order to apply for a residency permit in France, one must usually first obtain a Schengen visa. People usually arrive on a tourist visa and start to process their application for residency once they are there (except cases of obtaining a working visa through an employer for instance). The same is probably true in Italy, Germany, and Spain. The entire process, as far as I know, may take several months so patience is needed. In the meantime, I think it is wise to warn people not to violate the terms of their visas. The reason why being that authorities in Europe have traditionally been very protective of their domestic labour force. Successive governments have sought to stem migration flows and issued more expulsion orders.

Now, let me enjoy my vacation.

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....

So much plenitude, yet so much emptiness

Sadly, ...

Sadly, for a lack of substance, you feel the need to resort to personal attacks yet again. 3d_emoticon_thumbDown.gif

You don't need a Schengen visa to travel to those countries if you have a US passport.

Exactly!

Yup, a USC travels on VWP, which grants him/her the same rights as someone holding a Schengen visa. To live and work in Europe, USCs need to apply for residency and work permits. Also, USCs will only be hired if the hiring company can prove that there isn't a similarly qualified EU-citizen for the job.

Permanent Green Card Holder since 2006, considering citizenship application in the future.

zzzzzzzz -_-

PS: USC cannot work in EU unless he or she has residency and/or obtained a working visa.

Of course not. I never claimed anything to the contrary. Yet, any way you slice it, the Schengen Visa has absolutely nothing to do with any of this. Which is all I said earlier. ;)
Yes, but a USC will never need to get a Schengen visa to achieve said residency or work permit.

You got it.

It is not always true. Based on the information that I have in France (I don’t know about other EU countries), USC must apply for a “long stay” visa at the Consulate if he or she plans on coming for other purposes than tourism and/or stay in France for more than 90 days. American passport holders are all required to obtain a visa to spend more than 3 months in France. There may be exceptions to this rule, but I am not sure what they are and who they apply to. I heard of a few people who had problems with the immigration there, so please be careful.

Fox, I would just advise you to inquire at the Consdulate of Spain in the US before you leave, which will be the best place for you to find accurate information.

Unless, of course, their spouse happens to be a French national. Check it out!

That is unfortunately not true  . The French consulate asked my friend in 2002 (married to FR citizen) to apply and obtain a long stay visa in order to immigrate to France. Go to a French consulate and ask. You will get your answer.
