Poor driving conditions, bad weather hit Montreal area

Last Updated: Saturday, December 22, 2007 | 4:55 PM ET

CBC News

Police in Montreal warned motorists on Saturday about deteriorating road conditions as the area continues to dig out and clean up from heavy snow.

At least four people were killed in accidents in and around Montreal, where road conditions in some places are treacherous.

A man died Saturday morning in a crash that shut down the landmark Jacques Cartier bridge for several hours.

In Terrebonne, just north of Montreal, two people died and two others were injured after an accident Friday night.

Another man died in an accident about 70 kilometres north of Montreal.

The area is digging out from a heavy week of snowfall. Some 200 trucks an hour have been working to remove and dump thousands of tonnes of snow.

Officials had hoped to have snowbanks cleared by Christmas Day.

But Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay said Friday it may in fact take until Dec. 29 to get the job done.

Rain forecast for the weekend is expected to slow the operation because road crews will have to salt roads first before clearing snowbanks.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

A candid report from the inner city (of Montreal):

Rain, yes, truly bizarre.

Warmth fell upon us starting yesterday and a lot of snow has and is melting.

It is about 7 degrees Celsius now, and the roads are just wet.

Crazy winds cancelled many flights this evening, including my fiancé's. American Airlines put him on a very delayed United Airlines flight.

The road conditions are really good now.

They have hauled away almost all of the snow on the streets and have even cleared the bicycle paths.

A good thing, because some wingnuts were cycling through the foot deep such and snow in the middle of the side roads.

Hahaha!

Need any (more) info on Montreal?

Please do PM me.

Yup, still raining here at about 9pm. But I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when we arrived that the main streets in the burbs were all very clear. The block that D's parent's live on was another story but even that wasn't too bad. Basically huge mounds of snow all over the place and parking has gotten a bit creative.

Here's hoping that the rain tonight doesn't turn to ice overnight. We are planning on driving down to Vermont late morning and are keeping fingers crossed that the road conditions are as good as when we arrived on Saturday.

Oh man, it has turned icy.

And the (latest) craziest news: a pedestrian got struck on the head by a huge chunk of ice (icicles?)

that fell off of a building walking on Ste. Catherine Street East by Papineau.

He is in critical condition.

What timing, huh?

Oh Calgarians are lucky.

I really am not a Winter girl...unless I am spending it in Hawai'i or somewhere like that.

Talk about your icicle built for sorry. :crying: When I was peering out over the city from the 19th floor I saw a huge chunk of ice fly down from a building to an empty area below, so I guess it was just a matter of time.
