Maybe I don't quite understand the communal living concept. I just see it as apartment/condo living with added amenities to make life more convenient (restaurant/cafe, convenience stores, a good bingo game etc.).

Hmmm. I read it again and you may be right. I thought 'commune' and jumped to conclusions.

Don't they already have these all over the place in Florida? How's this different from any other "55 or better" condo complex? They play bingo and bury each other too.

This was actually fairly common in Soviet Russia, though not by choice. About 15% of the population lived in forced, communal apartments as recently as 1990.

A lot of my European friends were kind of shocked that most University students in the US shared rooms here. Private rooms in dorms are far more typical there. (I always paid for a private room anyway).
