Hi all, i just renewed my i-751 cost me 545 dollars and is only good for 1 more year! why? how many more times will i have too file this form and pay this price? When can i apply for citizenship. why does this form cost so much money. I came over on a K1 and got my PRC for 2 years only with conditions. Can you tell i was alittle disappointed with the length of time.

You have really applied for a 10 year green card... the 1 year extension is issued because your green card will most likely expire before the 10 year card is issued.

You can apply for citizenship once you have been a perm res for 3 years if your application is marriage based and your marriage is still legit (happy, in love, doing taxes together, living together blah blah blah)

Something tells me you only read the first two sentences of the notice. If you had kept reading it should have been pretty obvious to you that what you got was a receipt notice, not an approval notice.

That said, you're not the only one to freak out when getting a notice from USCIS. Getting mail from them can be rather traumatic. That's why it's very important to read what they send you thoroughly before jumping to any conclusions.

ok it says your conditional resident status is extended for a period of one year . During the one-year extension your are authorized employment and travel.. so that says too me its only good for one year? the rest of the letter explains about military etc and sending supporting papers which i have done all ready. and i have too go get fingerprints etc done.

oh by the way I did read it all.

You did. Just not thoroughly. I highlighted the piece that you must have missed. What this receipt notice does is extend your current status for one year during which the USCIS will adjudicate your joint I-751 petition. Once it is adjudicated, you either gain unconditional PR status or - in the unlikely event that USCIS hands down a negative decision - you lose your PR status altogether. That said, until that adjudication takes place, you remain a conditional permanent resident even though your actual GC is expired. Again, the notice only serves to bridge the time between the expiration of your current GC and the adjudication of your petition.

Does that explain it?

Perhaps I assume too much about what may or may not be obvious... In an attempt to see things from your point of view, I re-read the I-751 instructions and didn't see anything in the Processing Information section advising about a one year extension being granted upon acceptance of the petition.

The way the process works is this. After you file the I-751, you get a receipt notice (the letter you just received) extending your status for one year. In a few weeks you should expect another notice telling you to appear at an ASC for biometrics. Once that's done, you may get a request to send additional evidence if USCIS feels it is necessary to adjudicate your application. Once USCIS has all of the evidence they need and makes a decision, they will send you a notice informing you that they have approved or denied your case. If they approve your case, they will then send you a green card valid for ten years.
