I wouldn't let her have the gift now and I wouldn't give it to the other kid, as tempting as it sounds.

She definitely needs to learn that there are consequences for her actions. If you don't learn that when you're young it makes life a lot harder as you get older. Not letting her get away with be sneaky will help her to develop her own moral compass.

I would take the gift and save it for a birthday gift (depends when it is) or a gift at another time. That way she gets it eventually but doesn't get it in a few days. 9 years olds are definitely old enough to learn a lesson IMO especially since she is a repeat offender and all.

It's CHRISTMAS you meanieeeees! and she's 9! Christmas should be the happiest time on a kid's life, not a time for tough lessons...all about happy, cookies and presents

I'd just rewrap the present and talk to her. Kids understand a lot more than we give them credit for :)

Saludos,

Caro

I would have told you to take the present back to the store and give her nothing.

But that's just my opinion.

I'm dead inside.

does it have to turn into an After School Christmas Special?

I would leave the gift unwrapped and while the other kids are excitedly opening their gifts, I'd just let her have hers unwrapped so she can think about what she did and I would express my disappointment to her. I would also tell her parents as well.

Way to suck the fun outta Christmas, peeps!

She already ruined her surprise, isn't that enough? Or does it have to turn into an After School Christmas Special?

She broke the rules. She must be reprimanded. Christmas is one day a year, the rules are forever.

LAWL. You're like my mom, who canceled a trip to take my cousins to Disney World after they didn't show appreciation and were rude to her.

Learning how and when to suck up to people with more money and power (adults, if you're a child) is a valuable lesson for life.

My sister has a friend, Patti-Jo. I love this girl- she is such a hoot.

When Patti was a child- she used to get so excited about Christmas- she would get up in the middle of the night and not only open all of her presents but everyone else's as well.

 So true... it's something I wish I'd worked harder on. (Still glad the office I worked in during college has closed so there is no easy way for a potential employer to contact that employer)

I'm guessing she's grown up to be a law-breaking brigand without a care in the world.

She's not going to learn anything that way. She'll just hate you and have a bad christmas. Talk to her and she'll respect you, understand the situation, and learn how to think for herself
