Hello everybody, it's been a while!!! Well, I've been in the good old USA for less than 24 hours and I've cried buckets!!! ...Because I miss my home and family sooooooooooo much. I am very happy to be with Bruce (I love him dearly) but I wish we could live in Newfoundland..................only 11 more years before he retires Like the song goes...........''You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime you find...........you get what you need"....Rolling Stones

Ok so here I am.....The ferry from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia was 3 1/2 hours late because of high winds (typical). The border crossing (Calais, Maine) was painless.....they were quite nice............didn't check the U-Haul or anything. Bruce and I went into the office unescorted and we were finished everything within a half hour. Ok so now what do I do???? The border guard said I can't apply for status until we are married which will be May 16. Did she mean that I can't file anything until after?? That will mean that my Advance Parole application will be a month behind (and I desperately need my AP!!!) Can somebody help me out with this?? Exactly what steps do I take from here (yes I've checked the guide but I am so befuddled right now ) I appreciate any help you can give me.....................................{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}

Marie, I hate to tell you this, but the border guard was right. You can't apply for AP until you apply for AOS, which can't happen for a K-1 visa holder until after you are married. So here's the steps:

--get married

--apply for AOS, AP and EAD

--wait!

Some people apply for their social security number before marriage -- if you decide to do that, you have to wait for 2 weeks from now to apply (they need that time to get your name in the system). Your SSN card will be in your maiden name, so after you get married, you'll have to go back and get it changed (if you decide to go by your married name).

I personally waited until after I was married, took all my stuff required, and got my SSN card then. Some people have had trouble doing this, so read up on the SSN info and go from there.

I went through the same border crossing, was very painless, I interuppted the Customs guys solitaire game on the computer!! Best of luck in the rest of the process

the homesickness is hard for some of us. For me I hadn't expected it so didn't handle it at all well.

No filing before you have your marriage certificate, but you have time to get it all ready to go, slip in a copy of your marriage certificate and pop it in the mail on your honeymoon!
