For a second there Steve made me think that maybe I'm some weirdo. Well, I guess I still might be but at least I'm not alone.

Don't worry, just because Steven thinks something or someone is weird doesn't make it so. :P

Silence! You're breaking my psychological grip on the weaker minded.

If the opportunity arises, I'd go within the next couple of years.

California has great weather, is full of things to do, has ocean/lakes/mountains/deserts/forests and varied landscapes. The food, farming, wine, and other nicer aspects of living here are unparalleled. San Francisco, while a liberal nut fest at times is also cultured with fine dining, museums, landmarks, shopping, etc., that you can't find in smaller areas.

Los Angeles is a city like no other with the movie industry "Welcome to Hollywood," thoughts of being a star, Disney, Universal, Magic Mountain and other theme parks.

Nevada is a short drive or plane ride to Las Vegas, Reno, and Tahoe and the skiing and entertainment options there. Hawaii is a 4 hour hop away. Mexico is a short hop as well.

Housing prices are definitely BS. I was saying long, long before the current housing situation that speculators were driving the market by taking out 0 down loans with teaser rates and flipping the homes in 6 months or so for a $20-50K+ gain. Nice for them while it lasted, but it screwed real homeowners, skewed prices even more than usual, and a large group of homes facing foreclosure are the speculators running away.

Of course the experiences a person has in California, just like in all areas in life relate to where you live, what you do for work, who you know, and your access to resources and ability to save for the future. If I were a white kid living in Compton or East Palo Alto I'd run for any other state ASAP.

I agree with all you say here !! And, as more people bail, the housing prices will decline to more realistic levels.

I have lived and worked in Calif all my life. I could not imagine living any other place, if not for the weather alone, as I watch what is happening this week in the northeast and east.

For you and I, and many others who are married to women from China, this is a really great place as there is so much Asian/Chinese culture here in this state, as well as a huge Asian/Chinese population. My Lao Po is from the South of China, so she will appreciate the moderate climate and the very warm summers. Some rain, but never any snow where I live, thank God. ;)

Some rain, but never any snow where I live, thank God. ;)

Sounds like my idea of hell. I like snow, or better put, I like clearly defined four seasons.

Beyond that, California is way, way, way, way more expensive than I could ever imagine I could be able to afford. I had some fun playing with COL calculators the other day. To live in expensive SF my cost of living would increase by a seizure inducing 120%. For most cities in Cali, my cost of living would rise between 75% and 100%. Even with some degree of employer pay match, it is hard to wrap my mind around such a leap in the cost of living.

California is great to visit, but there would be no real convincing me to stay.

I'm teasing, Reinhard. :P But seriously, if one cannot make the distinction between commenting on something as weird and actually calling someone a weirdo, then there's some kind of cognitive breakdown. ;)

The cultural norm these days is for women to be in the workforce, eriod, ESPECIALLY women without children.

I'm sure by "weird" Steven just meant that you don't see a stay at home wife much anymore.

I barely even know any stay at home Moms, let alone stay home wives.....reminds me of "I Love Lucy" Lol

I'm a stay home Mom right now and it's kind of lonely....all my friends are at work

"We are the real countries,

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."

Yes. Staying at home to raise kids, IMO, is one the most difficult, over-time jobs anyone could have and I tip my hat to those that make that sacrifice. "I Love Lucy" is what I would envision as a stay at home wifey...with the apron over the day dress....LOL.
