K-1 can apply for SSN within 75 days after entry, after that SSA will not issue you SSN until you have EAD card or Green-card, and even then you eed to wait at least 2 weeks for USCIS to update the database used by SSA to confirm immigrations status.

Thx for your quick response Yuanddan. So I should give additional 2 weeks for them to upload info in their data base.

It's 76 days and it's not some much your ability to apply, but where you are at the time your status is verified. If you apply the first day you get here and SSA verifies your status on the 77th day you are SOL and then need an EAD card or I-551.

I just want to keep you guys posted that I received EAD card in mail and went to SSA office right away yesterday. They let me apply for the SSN card even my new last name has not been updated in their system yet. They said it will take about 2 weeks to get the card.

Yes apply for that social security card as soon as you get here. They screwed ours up and it took 8 weeks to get it. Make sure they have you under the correct visa, etc. Hope this helps.

PS--Once you get that SS#, you can apply for jobs. You can't until then.

That's what I did right after I had my EAD - had the SSN within 8 days. Good luck to you.

By the way - it is not true that you can't apply for a job without a SSN. If you have EAD you can apply and tell the employer that you are waiting on the SSN, most companies won't have a problem with that (especially because you get that confimation letter from the social security office, that you actually applied). Friend of mine worked for 2 months having EAD but waiting for the SSN, wasn't a problem at all.
