I forgot one bit, you have to say 'wappers' instead of 'rappers'

Imagine if an bow and arrow killed you. That would suck. An arrow killed you? They would never solve the crime. "Look at that dead guy. Let's go that way."

bows kill too?

I think a lot of people would be surprised just what you can and cannot have in your possession while in public.

But that's not what this is about, is it?

In the larger context of the arguments made here, it sure is.

What is the "use" of cigarettes? How many die each year, directly or indirectly, from them?

Use for cars

Versus

Use for imitation samurai swords.

I was blind & now I see. Of course, imitation samurai swords are actually entirely necessary implements, utilised on a daily basis by billions of people worldwide. I feel like such a ####.

Cigarette use? None for me; I don't smoke. But governments are ensuring that they don't cause more harm than necessary, eg. banning the sale to children and banning smoking in public areas. If someone wants to kill themselves with lung cancer, that's up to them. Similarly if someone wants to slit their wrists with razor blades, do you honestly believe I would advocate we ban them too? Or are we all on some extreme-and-ludicrous-argument fest today? However - strange tho I am - I don't see the need for people to arm themselves with imitation samurai swords. I do need enlightenment, it appears.

Steven, when you see the light, can you yell my way so that I can follow? I'm also one of those crazy people that think samurai swords are weapons, and not tools

Saludos,

Caro

No one is seeing them as tools. Nor do I see anyone thinking someone should be walking around public swinging one around either. What we are defending is a person's right to own one. A lot of people like to collect swords, knives, what have you. Maybe it is crazy for you, but not to them. I think collecting Barbie dolls is very crazy-!!!

As I said before, I can see a baseball bat as a weapon. It can kill just as easily. But I'm certainly not going to call for a banning! None of these do the killing. It is the people that choose to use them for the wrong purpose.

caro, samurai swords (real ones) cost thousands of dollars (one price i saw years ago was 5k). i really doubt someone will spend that much to commit a crime.

I like how the Home Office bod says "In the wrong hands, samurai swords are dangerous weapons", In anyone's hands a samurai sword is a dangerous weapon. That's why the Samurai used them... and how they were better at killing than peasant farmers with clubs and pitchforks...

Yes - its a silly law - on top of other silly laws. That said they get away with it because it affects very few people; and oddly enough the few people I came into contact with in the UK who were "knife people" and collected swords and knives etc stuff were the sort of bad tempered friday night pub-fight guys who should probably stay away from pointy objects anyway.

The UK Govt has already shown its willingness to change laws following high-profile public outrage crimes. On balance I'd say the decision was right - re: guns following the Dunblane Massacre. Certain types of knives were outlawed following the stabbing death of a teacher at a London school, and its generally illegal to carry a knife on your person without a valid reason.

So where does it end? Kill with a candlestick, outlaw candlesticks weighing more than 2.5 kg and longer than 20 cm? Kill with a rock, outlaw the more dense kinds of rocks? If someone wants to kill, they will find a way.

Of course they will - but I'm not sure what purpose is served by throwing up a bunch of relativisms. If we go down that road we might as well as "why make anything illegal" - with the argument ranging all the way from assault rifles to illegal drugs. Everyone draws a line somewhere on what is acceptable and what isn't. I don't much see the point in this specific law - but again the precedent for this was set years ago, following the Dunblane Massacre. I don't recall too much public opposition to that at the time or since...
