Banning samurai swords

You seem to be missing the point. If someone wants to commit murder there is an unlimited number of things you can use as a weapon, be it a tacky decoration like a fake sword or the family car. You can't ban everything that can be used.

You seem to mistake me for someone who wants to ban everything that can be used as a weapon.

It's a ridiculous argument. Yes, I'm sitting here surrounded by stuff that I could use to cause injury to another person. However, all of this stuff has an original and useful purpose. I don't see why I would buy an imitation samurai sword. Are they particularly good for chopping vegetables and everyone is aware of this except me?

It is not arming themselves. Why doesn't someone have the right to purchase a decorative sword if that is what they like to display in their den? Someone can kill with a candlestick too. Objects don't do the killing. Banning an object because it might or has killed someone? You need to ban a whooollle lot of things.

Or are we all on some extreme-and-ludicrous-argument fest today? However - strange tho I am - I don't see the need for people to arm themselves with imitation samurai swords. I do need enlightenment, it appears.

The real samurai swords are exempt.

So what if it doesn't have a use to you? Someone else with a Japanese motif may have a different opinion. Is it up to the government to regulate how you decorate your house?

Self defense, seeing how y'all managed to ban guns. A brutha needs a way to defend himself.

We have stones, cars, hammers etc for that purpose.

Well, to a certain extent, yes - hence my 'nuclear warhead anvil' jibe.

Uh ho, Do I need a permit to use my nail gun?

a sword is hardly similar to a nuclear warhead.

But as to the red bit, you proved our point.

So my decorations should be banned? That bow and arrow can be shot.

My nuclear warhead serves a purpose. I bend horsehoes on it. Leave it alone. And if you use your imitation samurai sword to trim your toenails, you can keep it.

What point did I prove that I hadn't already discussed?

You can keep your bow & arrow. Can I keep my anvil?

That anything can be used as a weapon...hell, if we're taking public safety, a good bread knife can do some real damage.

But if anything can be used, imo the banning of ss is stupid.

As far as the nuke, your use of hyperbole is not really lending anything to the discussion, imo as it's an impossibility to freely own a nuke.

Why are brass knuckles illegal? Nunchucks? There's a myriad of weapons that most states have laws against the possession of....a Samurai sword would fall right in line with such outlawed weapons.

You can keep your asinine analogies.

Lisa, I had already mentioned that.

You seem to mistake me for someone who wants to ban everything that can be used as a weapon.

I'm glad I'm the only one indulging in hyperbole here!

Gary, it seems we agree that there is a line to be drawn as to when the government can and cannot interfere with the things we own. That's all I'm getting at. Obviously, my line is further left, shall we say.

Steve is making a point by showing that both extremes of the argument are equally absurd.
