So do I take this to mean that you guys will support me in my right to buy and own ivory chess sets, Tiger skin rugs, gorilla hand ashtrays and human lampshades?

 So, owning a samurai sword or a gun requires the death of a member of an endangered species? Can you say, non sequitur?

Like the comic?

Seriously, though. This board is like a demonstration of the many different logical fallacies.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

--July 22---------Sent I-129F packet

--July 27---------Petition received

--August 28------NOA1 issued

--August 31------Arrived in Terrace after lots of flight delays to spend Lindsay's birthday with her

--October 10-----Completed address change online

--January 25-----NOA2 received via USCIS Case Status Online

How so? I believe the point was "Punish the person, not the object".

You want to make an exception for one object over another - all the while asking "OMG this is so ridiculous. If we ban X why don't we ban Y?".

Clearly everyone draws a line about this somewhere... And nobody bats an eye about restricting the sale of certain objects, and not others.

Other than that of course - it wasn't really meant to be a serious point...

How many times have I read "those wacky teens" or "they just want a better life" in other topics? You mean I can't get away with applying that kind of cynicism here?

No.

Anyway, I don't see why you Americans are all bent out of shape. If the UK wants to ban lookalie Samurai swords, why do you care? No one is suggesting you go live there, are they?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I should also reiterate that there are many countries which have more restrictive laws on the sale of swords, knives etc than the UK does. And indeed those laws have been in place for a long time.

Obviously if the UK had a well-funded lobby group like the NRA (or indeed a Samurai Sword equivalent of it), likely these things would be legal there.

Personally speaking, it affects so few people that I could really care less. I've never had any inclination or desire to collect that kind of thing. I guess you never miss what you never had.

If it needs any clarification - no, I don't have an ivory chess set, Tiger skin rugs, gorilla hand ashtray or human lampshade. Nor do I want one...

  • 1 year later...

I don't know how many times I've had this discussion with friends. I'm waiting for the governmental "hand-ban", which prevents anybody from touching anybody else ever again...

You know those industrial metal rulers you can get? Hell, those are painful, and...ooh, screwdrivers! Pepper spray is banned here, knives in public...I had a friend who always used to say that a girl should carry a screwdriver in her bag. Others have suggested a key, which can be held between two fingers and jabbed in an attacker's eye. Let's not forget the bag itself. I should keep a brick in mine. We have a ninjitsu society or something like that at university, and they more or less teach people how everyday objects (like a credit card) can be used as a lethal weapon.

But as others have said, the law-abiding people will follow the law, and the ones who don't...well, they won't. Now I'm waiting for some eight-year-old chav, who doesn't give jack about the law, coming up to me going, "I'm gonna cut'cha! I'm gonna cut'cha! I'm not bovvered [innit/yeah] by the [f-bomb-ing] law [innit/yeah], so I'm gonna cut'cha!"

For the record, I do love ancient swords and beautifully crafted weaponry.

Magpie.

Oooh yeah. You've got a law-abiding citizen right there...
