... this guy has a right to teach his son in the manner he sees fit.

Of course he does, no one is taking his right away from him. People who hear the story have a right to an opinion about it too, though. If merely stating our thoughts on stories meant we were infringing on the rights of the people in the stories, well... message boards wouldn't exist :P

And 'ooh tell him you're returning it but give it to him anyways after faking him out' is IMO a way to ruin your credibility with kids.

I wasn't saying he should fake him out. I'm saying that, when he opens the gift, he is told "you are lucky I didn't return that after I caught you smoking pot."

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh no," I said, "Disneyland burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late." ~ Jack Handy

Not really. It gives you an opportunity to actually talk to him about it versus screaming at him. It also lets him know that you are looking out for him, not just telling him what to do.

Maybe a little trip to the local drug addict hang-out for a little observation might be in order. ;)

Who said anything about screaming?

Choices have consequences. That's life. Taking away the kid's game is harsh, but it teaches the kid responsibility for his actions. But we can agree to disagree on this....it is not my intent to debate parenting styles as there's more than one school of thought. What annoyed me about your first post was the ignorant 'he's prolly a drunk' #######.

If my dad did that, the only lesson I'd learn from it is that dad overreacts and next time I better be more careful.

Quotations marks (inverted commas) denote quotation and I would never use prolly.

Sorry, I didn't realize you had something invested in this alcoholic father. ;)

I was just making a point that the dad does this, saying that pot is terrible, but probably drinks with some regularity. Given that most people in the US drink, I feel like that's a safe judgement. It's parental hypocrisy. And I said drunk, because I make it a point to call people who drink drunks, like most people call anyone who smokes marijuana a pothead. I'm just keeping it real in here.
