We had quite the midwestern snowfall late Friday night and Saturday. We must have received 6 inches! Yesterday it was bright and sunny, and most of the streets and sidewalk snow melted, but we have a lovely blanket. This is truly lovely given the six feet we received in Saskatchewan just before I left in January. Supposed to be 49 by Wednesday, so I'm guessing it will be all gone by then.

Carla (F)

Yes. It's all the midwest's* fault for all the weather we've been right up the St. Lawrence Valley region.

We are now drowning in snow in Montreal, although the sun is shining brilliantly...woke me up.

*Why is it still called the midwest? It's time for an update. ;)

haha funny you should mention that. That's what people here call it where I live in St. Louis. And people in St. Louis think that Saskatchewan is the midwest too. Go figure! If people in Saskatchewan heard it say that they live in the midwest, they'd gag a maggot.

Carla (F)

Hey Carla...totally!

My precious fiancé is from the "midwest" and so...but that wasn't the first time I heard it. Another friend from Indiana told me 2 years ago something about the solidity and conservatism of midwest people. And I asked where that was...hahaha.

I just looked at him as he giggled because he could see that this was not computing; geography is one of my favourite subject.

So I pulled up Google Maps and zoomed into the U.S.

Me: Look here the middle of the U.S. is waaaayyy West of Lake Michigan!

Friend: Yup. It is strange isn't it. It is based from historic (demographic) times.

Me: I need to research this.

And research I did.

I have figured it all out....and indeed people are stuck on an antiquated name that has not applied for almost a century.

Hahaha!

Try to create change in an unmovable society though. :hehe:

My sweetie cannot even look at the map when I am trying to point this fact out to him!

He closes his eyes and says, "It is the Midwest. What are you talking about?!"

Me: "Chicago is nowhere near the middle, let alone the West!"

Bahahaha.

Yup...stubborn first borns...like I said.

UPDATE MIDWEST PEOPLE! :D

(oops, am I in The Vent thread?? sorry, hee hee)

I'd love to see the reaction of people from this area when you tell them they need to update. Not going to happen.

Andre drove for the first time ever in the snow on Sunday morning. It was a lot of stress for me.

Is that what they said....6 inches? I never heard the totals. From the looks of my car and my deck, I thought it was more .

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Aww Spirit!! I love your pics too!!!

That squirrel is adorable!

My dad loves to eat peanuts out of the shell. That reminds me of this one time I took his whole bag of peanuts he bought to eat and fed them to the chipmunks in our backyard...boy was he mad!:lol:

Those pictures are great, Spirit. I love the bike and the cars buried in snow. But the squirrel is hilarious. I'd buy him/her peanuts too. Too funny.

I'm in love with him/her.

We are taking off to Mexico for the Winter!

Speaking of which, do any of you ever listen to Stuart McLean of Vinyl Café on CBC radio?

He had a good one yesterday; I fell off my chair laughing.

He was talking about how it is the dark days now; short and cold...almost the Solstice where Winter starts and the days get longer.

And he was musing about the songbirds from his yard that are all gone...the warblers, finches, etc.

Then he was imagining a conversation in between two of these birds from way down South where it's warmmmmm:

One bird says to the other on humans, "Why do you suppose they stay up there in the North in Winter?"

Other bird, "Yeah, who's the 'bird brain' now?!"

Six FEET?!!! :o Was that just one snowfall?

I grew up near Buffalo. I remember one year they had 6 feet of snow in one storm, and then got 6 more feet 2 days later! And that was on top of the foot or two already on the ground. We got virtually nothing from those storms, which was really disappointing to me because it would have meant getting out of school.

Jomo's Girl, it looks like more than 6 inches to me, too. I have not heard any official total.

That was CRAZY wasn't it, Songbird? I'm from Oakville so I remember it well. And I was disappointed I didn't get a snowday either. Where are/were you?

Blizzard of '77? I remember in December of 1991, Toronto received 18" in 12 hours. I was delivering newspapers in those days so I remember it too well.

Songbird, I just hope you didn't live in the South Towns. Yikes!!!!

December 2001, Mumsie! Link

December 1991 was when Toronto had to call in the army, wasn't it?

That was the one where Buffalo got 8ft of snow in two days, I do remember that one. The Army one was when Mad Mel Lastman panicked, but he wasn't Mr. Mayor in 1991 (before amalgamation). Only 12" of snow when they called in the army. When he was Mayor of North York he had kick ### snow removal but once amalgamation came, he freaked out.

I grew up in Rochester, NY. When it came from the north, we got blasted, and when it came from the west, Buffalo got blasted. That's why they got 12 feet of snow and we hardly got any (which means we may have gotten under a foot...!). It might have been '77 that I'm thinking of. I can't remember exactly, but around that era. 12 feet of snow in 2 days is kind of unusual even for Buffalo.

I turn to my left and there were those eyes, looking at me!

I grabbed my camera, of course.
