I just don't get how you could have lived on Earth for more than 20 years and have never once heard the name of the country of Hungary. Or not know that France is a country. I just can't imagine what it's like living with a mind like that. I mean, you have to be pretty stupid not to have absorbed that information SOMEWHERE.

Well not stupid - just ignorant. I can see how it could happen to a person if they lived in the midwest all their life, never left home and scraped through with a highschool education. ...

She's from the South, not the Midwest! And certainly stupidity is (rightly or wrongly) more a stereotype of the South than of the Midwest. Have you been to the Midwest?

I've been to Ohio and Milwaukee. Perhaps I shouldn't have picked a region - the phrase "Small Town America" probably fits the bill. In any case its not really about geographic areas as much as the general level of education of certain individuals; and their willingness or ability to travel outside of the continental United States. IMO - that makes it a class issue too, though not one exclusive to this country. I know people from the South of England who are shockingly ignorant when it comes to American, European or even British history and geography.

He's been sleeping really poorly for like a year and a half and also snores, grinds his teeth and stops breathing in his sleep. So finally he's gone in for a study. Apparently treating his sleep disorders will help him stop being so tired all the time. (go figure)

I'm the same about needing a few hours of being awake -- but in my house -- to unwind. But I got home at 11:30, so, off to bed.

Sleep Apnoea?

That can be dangerous later in life - father in law has that on top of a heart condition.

In KC it's like there's NOTHING...ANYWHERE. No city to drive away from.

Sounds awful. A mall does not a city make, I wonder if the people who planned KC know that :P

The latest trend in NJ is to rebuild the old "walkable downtowns" that so many towns had before the advent of the automobile. There are a bunch of new projects to rebuild that along with the reactivation of old train stations and old train lines. It's very promising.

Have you seen the TV ads for the Elizabeth "Urban Regeneration program"? We cracked up at those - they carefully shoot a couple of store fronts (Gamestop, and a couple other B-list mainstream stores) and ignore the homeless guys, shambling drug addicts and the trash blowing around in the wind.

Still - got to give them some credit for fixing up the Jersey Gardens mall. We went there a few weeks back and its not half as skanky as I remember it.

Yup, hence the sleep study.

Chicago is pretty much that. It's good if you have a car, but you don't absolutely NEED one to get around. That could change if they let the El fall into decay

What's the level of commitment to public transport? In NYC, as I'm sure you know, there's no question that it lies at the center of public policy, they're building new trans hudson tunnels and they'll be Scranton PA to NYC in the next decade. There's no question that NYC won't be letting it fall into decay, is that not the case in Chicago?

The idea that KC sucks because of traffic is cute (and the crime thing is actually true!) but what really sucks about it is that it's like going into a giant mall in half of it and a totally dilapidated crack neighborhood in the rest. It's a huge suburb, of the faceless middle-American variety.

I live in one of those faceless suburbs, I've grown comfortable with that. Sad to say. I still enjoy the city though, it's always weird when we return to our quiet little corner of Jersey.

After living in Chicago for 22 years I would say that the EL is there to stay.

She did absorb it. Right straight into her boobs. She's got rubber blades on her lawnmower.

It's sad but true. Most young Americans don't think its important to know what's going on outside the US.

When my uncle came to the US yrs and yrs ago, and he would start a new job, they'd ask him where he was from. So he'd say Poland, and he kept getting the same response "Oh ya, Poland, isn't that located in Moscow" Yes they fit the whole country into the capital of a different country, you are right on the dot!

Quite so. When people ask me where my husband is form and I say Morocco, I get blank stares more often than not. I can understand not knowing the exact location of the country, but it would be nice if people didnt argue with me when I say its in Africa. Hello? Straight of Gibraltar? Casablanca?

Elizabeth will be the next Hoboken. Trust me on that. A lot of very rich people want it that way and therefore it will happen.

What about Newark? Will it be the next Hoboken?

Right now I can buy a 3,000 sq ft 8 bdrm mansion in Newark for the price of a tiny studio in Manhattan.

I seriously doubt it. Elizabeth is getting a lot more attention because the local government is supportive in ways Newark's administration is not. Newark sucks, which is a shame because if they could fix it up entire NJ Transit lines which terminate there will get immediate viability and what has happened in NJ towns along the NEC line can be replicated along the RARV line (for example).

BTW having yard work to do doesn't count as having something to do :P LOL

sure it does - just because your yard consists of a few window planters :P

I once almost moved to North Carolina

First of all, I'm such a 'city' person, and I am from NY, complete w accent.

We were being shown houses with a re agent, and I ask 'where's the nearest Catholic church?' and he's all 'end of town...but there are 5 Baptist ones on the next street if you're interested'

'Where's a good place to go out clubbing?' answer: "ATLANTA' <---#######? you have to leave the state????

and the clincher:

'Where's the nearest Jewish synagogue?' (Jews and Italians are practically the same, lol) Answer: hrmmm....like a place for that them there Jewish folk?'

what the fuque, I say! I promptly did a 'kthxbye' right then and there.
