I just don't get how you could have lived on Earth for more than 20 years and have never once heard the name of the country of Hungary.

Hungary? Are you serious?

Next time I'm in India I'll make sure to ask as many people who hang out on the streets as possible if they know what Hungary is. Most of them won't know, some will just stare at me and if I'm lucky I'll just get mugged and not killed.

Not knowing Hungary is easy. Not knowing 'America' is much less common.

Just saying.

Yeah, but 1. There shouldn't be anyone in the U.S. without enough of a link to the outside world, via TV, the Internet, movies, whatever, where at some time Hungary would have come up. AFAIK, Ms. Pickler grew up in this country, which says something really sad about us, and 2. I wouldn't be surprised if she hadn't heard of, say, Bhutan, but Hungary is in Europe, which is close to us culturally and not some sort of Other area like Asia. So most people have probably heard of most countries in Europe, I think.

I hardly think Im a genius, However, I'd off myself If were half that obtuse. I'm completely shocked and ashamed at how absolutely pathetic some people are in this country.

"...trick question." Europe... a country? (Well, maybe in the foreseeable future.) France... maybe a country? They speak French in Budapest? "I never heard of Hungary."

My 2% of respect for this woman is all lost now. The dumb act is far from cute anymore. It's crossed over to complete reality. Shut your mouth, stop singing, and go back to school.

I was intrigued so I had to get some biographical info on her. Apparently, she did go to school...in cosmetology(didn't finish) and paralegal school(dunno if she finished). But she felt like four walls could not hold her in, and she wanted more! (I wish they had a "finger in the mouth, i'm going to puke" smiley,)

So Amerian Idol hapenned and made her a pseudo-celebrity. I wonder if she knows that Simon Cowell is from Europe too, and they definitely don't speak French in the country he's from! ;)

Maybe you're right, but those folks on the streets didn't have the privilege of a school system and can't be blamed for not knowing about Hungary....that's the difference.

Next time I'm in India I'll make sure to ask as many people who hang out on the streets as possible if they know what Hungary is. Conversley, if you ask as many Americans where India is located geographically,....I bet you'll be surprised that they truly do not know. Most of them won't know, some will just stare at me and if I'm lucky I'll just get mugged and not killed.

I saw a street survey a while back on either Jay Leno, or David Letterman(I can't remember which) where they asked average people on the street what the capital of the United States of America was....guess what, an alarming number (I don't remember, but something like 3 out of 5) of peple did not know that Washington DC is the capital. So it truly does not suprise me that this chick is as dense as she is.

Young Americans know little about world geography, with the majority unable to locate Iraq on a map and three quarters unable to find Indonesia, according to a study. The Roper poll conducted on behalf of National Geographic found that most of the young adults questioned between the ages of 18 and 24 also had little knowledge about their own country, with half or fewer unable to identify the states of New York or Ohio on a map.

Moreover, the study said, many of those questioned were not bothered by their lack of geographic knowledge.

"Half think it is 'important but not absolutely necessary' either to know where countries in the news are located (50%) or to be able to speak a foreign language (47%)," a report on the survey said.

The report said that despite nearly constant news coverage since the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003, 63 percent of respondents could not find Iraq on a map and 75 percent could not find Israel or Iran.

It added that that nine in ten also could not find Afghanistan on a map of Asia and 70 percent could not find North Korea.

When questioned about natural disasters, only a third (33%) correctly chose Pakistan from four possible choices as the country hit by a huge earthquake in October 2005.

I know the survey's a year old...but still appilcable by the looks of Miss Pickler's lack of knowledge.

I think I lost some brain cells watching that video :dead:

Totally worth it though... Europe a country, and Budapest the capital of France

She's just ahead of her times. Europe will be a country soon enough.

I just wanted to let you know that I flipped channels for 20 minutes and heard mention of Hungary THREE times. And not fancy channels like Sundance or IFC, but Pickler-friendly channels like E! and NBC.

I would at least expect someone to know the difference between a country & a continent! But you're right, maybe that is asking too much.

You most definitely are. Africa is well known around here to be a country.

I don't think she actually knows that, though.

I just don't get how you could have lived on Earth for more than 20 years and have never once heard the name of the country of Hungary. Or not know that France is a country. I just can't imagine what it's like living with a mind like that. I mean, you have to be pretty stupid not to have absorbed that information SOMEWHERE.

Well not stupid - just ignorant. I can see how it could happen to a person if they lived in the midwest all their life, never left home and scraped through with a highschool education. Plenty of Brits are pretty ignorant as far as US geography goes...

Still - the best thing Kellie Pickler can do with her 5 minutes of fame and fortune is put the money towards a college education and a real career.

It's sad but true. Most young Americans don't think its important to know what's going on outside the US.

When my uncle came to the US yrs and yrs ago, and he would start a new job, they'd ask him where he was from. So he'd say Poland, and he kept getting the same response "Oh ya, Poland, isn't that located in Moscow" Yes they fit the whole country into the capital of a different country, you are right on the dot!

She's from the South, not the Midwest! And certainly stupidity is (rightly or wrongly) more a stereotype of the South than of the Midwest. Have you been to the Midwest?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
