My husand went to our local office today to enquire about his EAD status. The (very unhelpful and ill- informed) woman stated it was currently being processed in Missouri. Can anyone explain to me where the EAD is actually processed? It was sent to Chicago originally and he had his biometrics done at our local office.

Naturalization:

6/28/09: Mail N-400 to Texas

01/22/10: Oath Date

With thanks to all the helpful people who made this journey slightly more bearable.

It is processed at the National Benefits Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri

How does it get sent to Missouri? Do they just accumulate them all in Chicago and then send them out or do they send it to Missouri once they send the NOA 1, or is it sent there after the biometrics are taken?

The Chicago is only a lockbox processing facility in that they cash the checks, and check the petitions to make sure anything basic is missing (like a signature), log the petition in their system and generate the NOA1... after that, the petition is sent to Missouri to be processed by an adjudicator.

In most cases, the EAD case has already been approved by the time biometrics are done. The biometrics are required to generate the card.

I think all the NOAs are sent out from Missouri, so I would say the applications get to Missouri right after they are received in Chicago and the fees are collected in Chicago.

There is so much confusion with the EAD. When my husband went into our local office to enquire he was told it was "pending". Should he continue to go down to the local office regularly to enquire? I'm worried about it turning into the situation we have all heard so frequently about: it's approved for months but no notice or card arrives so people are left just waiting.

Usually it takes 60-90 days to approve EAD, even if the biometrics were taken early in the process you still should allow more time for the processing itself to be complete. If you've been waiting more than 90 days since the date on your EAD NOA then you should start worrying and go for an infopass appointment to ask for an interim EAD. If 90 days has not passed yet, then you have nothing to worry about and there's no much point going to the local office.

I just noticed that you sent your application in the beginning of march, there's no way EAD would be processed that fast. You should give it some time :)

There is no way we are just sitting around waiting for 90 days. We are proactive people- if we end up waiting that long fine, but we certainly won't just wait around til day 91 and then go into the office.

You can go into your local office until you're blue in the face, but they won't help you until the 90 days is up. You could do a search on VJ for people going through the same office as your husband and see how long they waited for their EAD. He may be lucky and get his EAD sooner than the 90 days.

It won't change anything, the EAD is not processed in the local office, so it's not like they can do anything about it. But if you want to waste your time and annoy everybody in your local office, go ahead :P
