Why not just make requirements for the death penalty? DNA evidence. If a guy's semen is found all over a beheaded corpse's crotch, kill him. Multiple murderer. Sorry, finding one guy's dna under 6 murder victims fingernails makes him a serial killer, and he should be ended. Make certain forms of sadistic murder explicity punishable by death. If a guy kills his wife by hanging her upside down and slitting her throat....kill him.

Sorry to disappoint, but this is not black and white. There are some people who deserve to die. That said, our DP systems are seriously disfunctional and need to be seriously tweaked. By making sure that only cases that meet strict guidlines are issued death sentences, then the appeals process could be reduced, and the cost of execution minimized.

Also, every prison should be run like Angola. Prisoners should farm their own food or they don't eat. They should not be fed and housed. They should be punished.

That makes no sense Charles, they aren't a threat to society at large when they are in prison. They need guards so that they aren't able to get out of prison and into society at large. Are you really that stupid?

i really think the last time you took a dump you shat your brains out instead. your original statement was: Criminals in prison are not a threat to society and many murderers are not given the option of parole.

my statement: if they are not a threat to society then why do they need guards?

obviously to keep them from escaping! duh!

He does say 'in prison' in there. I believe that clause may be doing some work, like expressing the fact that criminals who are in prison are not out in the streets murdering anyone.

Thank god it is literally impossible to escape from prisons.

Interview With an Executioner

After the death penalty was reinstated in Virginia, Givens noted, ruefully, "crime went up.''

Correlation does not imply causality. I'm sure the death penalty didn't cause the crime to go up. That's just an absurd implication.

Same concept applies to DNA evidence. Just having DNA is one thing, but proving that it belongs to the killer and was not planted to frame someone else is another story.

That he was trying to say that at all was an absurd inference on your part.

Would that work in US prisons though - many of which are little more than organised ghettos for the gangs? I can see plenty of "you steal my carrots, you die" scenarios cropping up. Poetic justice perhaps...? I dunno - I don't think the prisons need to be made any more dangerous for the folks who work there.

Had you read that statement in the context in which it was presented, you would have gathered, perhaps, that no such causality was implied. The executioner was simply saying that crime was on the rise when he supported the executions be resumed after they have been halted for some time. Yet against his expectations, crime did not recede but rather keep going up. He is, therefore, now questioning the supposed deterrent effect that he - at some point - believed the death penalty to have. That said, you did an excellent job of debunking an argument nobody but you made. ;)
