question to all the mommies: I am about to pack my hospital bag. What did you bring, what did you wish u had brought with you? What does the baby need? What should I not bring?

I've worked in maternity units in Germany and they provided everything for mom&baby until the day they left. But I guess it's different over here.

Also, were you allowed to eat or drink during labour?

I brought some stuff that I never used, but in my situation with the c-section, I had no energy to shower or even put on real clothes (changed my clothes the day I left). I packed nightgowns, socks, breastfeeding supplies/clothes, an outfit to take baby home in(along with hat and socks), a baby blanket, pairs of underwear(that you don't mind messing up possibly), shampoo/conditioner, deoderant, facewash, left tooth brush and paste at home oops! hehe but hospital had some for us. Hair ties, robe, moisterizing lotion, nail filer, slippers, pads (the kind I like instead of the weird hospital ones)... diapers and wipes(didn't need since hospital provided), camera, cell phone charger, batteries if needed for cameras, change for snacks and coffee(for husband), change of clothes for husband.

I never wore the pajamas/nightgowns, never took a shower, but the hospital did end up providing shampoo, mouthwash, lotion, etc.

I wasn't allowed to eat during labor, I think I could have had ice chips but they gave me an IV with fluid b/c I was kind of dehydrated from not drinking much while in labor before getting admitted(was sent home twice). I was so hungry though. I ate nothing the whole day that I had Kavi, it wasn't til the next day I ate. But with a c-section eating is delayed. I have heard some places might let you eat and some don't.

@Nane: Congratulations on your pregnancy, enjoy it.

@Chnst: I brought about the same stuff Stina had in her bag. I brought two bathrobes, sweatpants, socks, slippers, lotion and all other shower supplies, pads, shirts and a focus object (for the pushing stage). For Adam we brought diapers, wipes (didn't need them, the hospital provided them), his going home outfit, onesies - and I'm glad I brought those cause being born at 9lbs they only had a too small t-shirt and a hat for him, mittens for the baby a blanket and I think that was it. I also brought my body pillow but they took it away from me cause they thought me laying on it made Adam's heartrate drop (it was the cervadil though).

I would have been allowed to eat and Eric went to TAco Bell to get me something but when he came back they already had me on the Pit so I wasn't allowed anything but ice chips. I had one banana before I went to the hospital (on February 27th, at 6pm) and didn't eat again until March 1st about 5am and then all I got was jello and apple sauce. If you can, stay home as long as possible and have little snacks, that way you have a little control over it.

Also for DH I had a couple of those microwaveable ready to eat cans of lasagna and spagetthi etc and some energy drinks. I don't know when he ate them but he must have eaten them at some point. Of course he got tired and hungry too from me squeezing his hand all the time :star:

@Belvin: My husband bouth VitaminE Oil at Target, that really helps with dry, itchy skin. I use it when it's real bad and it usually helps.

Seems like my 'nursing-weaning problem' is solving itself here. Adam hasn't nursed since Tuesday. He just decided to sleep the nights through and during the day he won't nurse anyway. He doesn't seem to mind not to get boobie no more and I wont offer it to him but if he will wake up and he wants milk, I won't deny it either.

question to all the mommies: I am about to pack my hospital bag. What did you bring, what did you wish u had brought with you? What does the baby need? What should I not bring?

I've worked in maternity units in Germany and they provided everything for mom&baby until the day they left. But I guess it's different over here.

Also, were you allowed to eat or drink during labour?

I had a pre-planned c-section so no food or drink (even water) for 8 hours prior to being admitted. I was allowed ice chips after being moved to recovery. I was given a clear liquid meal that evening and soft food the next day because they wont let you have solids until you can toot.

For the baby I packed 2 outfits, 2 diapers, 2 blankets, and a small package of wipes for the trip home. While we were in the hospital, they provided burp rags, diapers, wipes, shirts, and blankets.

For myself I packed a nursing gown, nursings bras and pads, socks, underwear, hair ties, nail clippers, maxi pads, face wipes, deoderant, toothpaste, tooth brush, mouthwash, a mirror, tweezers, q-tips, a puzzle book, a novel, the camera and extra batteries, a pad of paper, and a couple of pens. I never did use my own underwear and pads because the hospital provided disposables that were much better suited to the task. I didnt bring soap or shampoo, but the hospital provided soap and I was too tired to wash my hair on the 2 occasions that I did shower. I wish I had brought more socks and another nursing gown. The hospital had special smocks for nursing, but I felt more comfortable in my own clothes. My husband decided the day of the birth that he was going to stay the night, not knowing what he was in for. I wish we had brought him some lounging clothes, toiletries, and earplugs. He had a very hard time sleeping because of the constant interruptions. I was used to it, but the next morning he was super cranky because of the noise. I also would have brought him some DVDs. I also wish I had brought a bathrobe for my walks outside the room. I couldnt venture out on my own until the 3rd day, but it would have been nice to be a little more covered up when I eventually did get to walk around my floor.

To be honest, you dont need much for baby. The hospital will provide for his needs while you're there. Just bring enough for the trip home. I personally didnt need much in the way of entertainment while in the hospital. Between the cable TV, visitors, and all the reading material loaded on me by the hospital I had plenty to keep me busy while I nursed.

Good Luck!

ETA: I brought my Boppy too, it was invaluable!
