This topic might have beed discussed already.. What do you think about preventive vaccination? Is it worth giving shots to our babies? And is vaccination for kids free in US? (My son is 1 year old)
I would say the preventive effect is worth it (do you really want to deal with an actual case of diphtheria, pertussis, measles, rubella, ... instead?).

Not free, unless you can actually prove yourself to be a malfeasant (illegal) immigrant.

They can be free. Depends on your state's requirements, but you can qualify the baby for Medicaid. Medicaid covers basic shots for bebes.

Plus, the little one will have to have shots to be enrolled in day care or school.

On another note. I have been breasfeeding for 1 year and 3 months. Now thinking about quiting.. Maybe too early? still doubting.. When did you quit breastfeeding?

Plus a lot of the things you are vaccinating against really ARE serious diseases. For example, a case of mumps in adulthood can make someone sterile, particularly males. I had a friend in college who got mumps because his parents didnt vaccinate him, it was very very sad to see him try to absorb the news that he himself might never have a child because he caught a very preventable illness....

congrats  stina&suj on your new arrival!!!

Thanks :)

Hey everyone! Hope you had a good weekend :)

I'm feeling the baby kick more and more ... I LOVE IT!!!! Hubby can't feel the baby yet and is really dying to, so I hope he can soon.

At what week were others (outside of the mommy) able to feel the baby kick?

And do other people here feel like they are losing their mind??? My memory is shot and I say stupid things more and more, especially at work! ARGH! Luckily, my clients are able to laugh it off, but I shudder at the thought of the day that doesn't happen. Last week, I meant to ask a client about a cruise she took, instead I asked about her "quiz" ... not so good to say to someone who suffers from test anxiety!!! She thought I was going to give her a quiz in session :(

I think it was around 26 weeks when hubby could really feel the kicking. I could feel it on the outside by around 24 weeks myself, but I had the feeling inside so I knew what it was, and hubby couldn't feel the light kicks yet til later.

No...it's not time. I did feel some new pains last night and I thought it might be starting, but it was just a warm up. I got long sharp pains on the top of the tummy, which I have never had, but they came and went, came and went and then went away. I am back at work this morning. We are expecting snow here, so maybe that is when he will arrive ?

Here is a picture of me yesterday:

I am going to get the usual vaccinations for Kavi. I just think the risk not to is greater than the risk to. Also we want to take him to India in the future and it's very important he gets vaccines before then. As for your breastfeeding question, it's really up to you! 1 year and 3 months is really good. I am having a problem with it so unfortunately it doesn't look like it's going to be a success in my situation. I am pumping some milk so Kavi gets at least some but he also is drinking formula. I wish I could just breastfeed but like I said, we are having problems with it. It's disappointing.

Good point. I can actually remember having to miss a few days in 1976 (my dad had a sabbatical year from UCalgary, so we stayed in Princeton from September 1976 to June 1977) to get a measles shot (I was unable to prove--or even remember--if I'd actually had the disease; it was NOT one of the shots typically administered/recorded in Alberta).

I say all this but Ill be lucky if I can keep the baby's shot records handy when the time come to present them to schools. Can I just show my stretch marks in lieu of his birth certificate? ;)

Nurses at the hospital tried to help but it still didn't work yet. I am pumping though, so he is getting some but not all.

Other than the fact that he is too cute, I noticed in one of the pics you posted in the other thread that Kavi had a pacifier in his mouth...I remember that at birth classes and right after I had my son they specifically told us (those of us who were planning to breasfeed exclusively that is) to ABSOLUTELY NOT give our babies pacifiers and/or bottles until they were at least 5 or 6 weeks old, because if introduced too early they could cause lots of trouble for latching on the breast, which can be complicated enough on its own already at times. The lactation nurse explained to me and the other moms that bottles/pacifiers require a totally different style of sucking than the breast, therefore they can (not necessarily but very often) cause some confusion in how the baby need to suck to get the milk. Also especially the bottle requires a lot less effort for the baby to get the milk so to introduce them before they are old/strong enough to deal with this difference is not advisable at all. Unfortunately my husband's cousin had to give up breatsfeeding for this very reason..her baby only wanted bottles because the breast was too much work:( They told her at the hospital to give her formula because her baby had mild jaundice, they said it was going to flush it away much faster...needless to say her pediatrician was really mad and couldn't believe they did that for the same reasons I mentioned above.

These are probably things you knew of already and maybe they don't even pertain to your specific problems, but I just thought I'd share with you and the other future moms of this thread what we were told. I hope you will be able to work it out, if not it's really great you are pumping. Things will resolve in a way or another. :star:

My baby just turned 23 months and he is still feeding once a day. I exclusively breasfed him until he was 7 months old then we introduced solids but I still used to be his human pacifier until a couple of months ago. He never ever showed any signs of wanting to self wean from the breast so don't wait for that to make your decision...sometimes it just doesn't happen that way. Since he was very little my pediatrician said it is really important to do it until they are at least a year old, but to keep doing it for another year if I wanted to because studies show it is actually very good for the baby. I don't work so I had no problems with it, I actually love every minute of it. It was really really hard to cut it down though...it is still his favorite thing in the world  Unfortunately I gave him the bad habit of falling asleep with it so it was really really hard...right now he feeds once to fall asleep for his afternoon nap, but that is going to be cut off any day now. Truth is it's a cuddling thing for both of us, it's not really because of the milk anymore. I must confess I will miss it terribly...

It's really up to you, whenever you feel/think it's time to cut it off you will lay down the law and make it stop. There is really no general rule and do not let anyone else influence you when it comes to a decision such as this. As long as your milk, which of course becomes shallow eventually, doesn't interfere with his growth (sometimes they get their tummy full with it not wanting real solid food) because he still eats what he is supposed to it as well, there's nothing to worry about.

Alot of times babies born via C/S have problems latching because they missed the first minutes that are sooo important for latching on and breastfeeding. That is why they put baby right to breast after they are born. Luckily Adam latched on even 5 hours after he was born and we never had a problem with it. Stina, I wuold suggest you find a good lactation consultant and try another position. my friends babygirl didn´t want to latch on for about a week and they fed her with a syringe because mom didn´t want to give up breastfeeding. Finally she found a good LC, tried the football hold instead of cradle hold and voila....they were a perfect team. Also, has your baby boy been checked for being tongue tied. sometimes they cannot wrap their tongue around the nipple right and cannot latch because of that. I hope you can figure our why Kavi doen´t want to latch on and I´m wishing you all the best.

Adam only nurses at night now. He´s 11 months old and although it is early, I´m trying to wean him off because I just cannot breastfeed a toddler and a newborn later on. When we´re back home (I´m still in Germany) I will put him on Soy Milk during the day and try to nightwean him again. I´m not offering the breast but I also don´t deny it. He sleeps with me in one bed rigth now (daddy is already in the US) and so he just inches his way to my ####### and latches on.

I have my next doc. appt. in two weeeks. I am very concerned because at night I have a tingling sensation in my fingers, hands, and arms. This sensation sometimes goes all the way up to my shoulders. I have been told that when people have diabetes they feel tingling sensations in the fingers. On my next appt. I will drink that #######, wait an hour to find out if that is the case. And this heartburn kills me every night.

Did anyone else have that awful numbness and tingling?

churipu-I know what you mean about the paci/bottle thing. I started pumping a little in the hospital b/c of the issues so he already had started on bottles to drink the breastmilk, so it already had been done. I know everyone says that once they have a bottle or paci they will never go back to breast, but I have a friend whose baby was a premie so she had to pump, and for months the baby wouldn't breastfeed. Then suddenly at 7 mos old, she started breastfeeding and has been doing it for over 5 months now. So I still have slight hope that it's not all lost. Thanks for the tips.

Eveline-You are right, it was about 3 hours until I finally had the chance to try to breastfeed. The problem doesn't seem to be the hold though, we tried every hold possible. We had a lot of people helping. I'd say it's more of a personal problem of mine, not the baby's. He has tried so hard to latch, but we seem to have some "compatiblity" issues because of his small size. Thanks for the well wishes!!

I am kind of stressed out by it...of course it's disappointing and you feel like a failure at times(regarding feeding). Just doing my best for now w/ pumping and trying to make sure he at least gets some breastmilk somehow even if it can't be the traditional way. The reason I so soon pumped and just gave it in a bottle is because you really do feel torn when he is crying and crying for food and he can't get it himself, I couldn't handle seeing him crying after trying to latch on so much and still not eating.

not the numbness but the heartburn....everynight i had to take 2 tums with lots of water just for it to go away so i could sleep....yuck i hate that!!!!

i would definatly mention that to your dr. and see what they have to say...i think Jax had something like that and hers was Carpal Tunnel Syndrome...that will go away after birth....something to look into and talk to your dr. about

It sounds like it is probably a combination of things that are causing problems :( , but please do not blame yourself for it although I can imagine how frustrating it must be. Especially right after delivery when your hormones are raging, you're trying to get better from a long labour and surgery and so on. Maybe you will be lucky as your friend and Kavi will eventually start feeding on the breast as well, just make sure you keep pumping so your milk won't go away! And if for some reason the whole breastfeeding thing ended up not working afterall, please don't feel like a failure, you are not! Sometimes it just doesn't work, you have to focus on the fact that you're doing your best, it's not like you're neglecting the baby or anything like that. You have nothing to feel guilty about. Thankfully these days there are many options available for babies who cannot breasfeed for whatever reason.

BTW don't fel like you need to justify yourself for having pumped early, I totally understand and you most likely did the right thing to do at the time since your baby was hungry and couldn't get what he needed.

Hang in there, things will get better. I wish you all the best. :star:

Now I have to go...my son just delivered a "burger" for me in his diaper.... :P
