Thanks so much for your thoughtful words and advice. I'll definitely work on finding a means to let go of some of this fear and stress.

Throwing ice cubes at the sink might prove fruitful :) Someone else mentioned they have a co-worker who does this to relieve tension.

Im a big fan of bath stuff, especially salts and fizzies. You can get a ton of faboo bath goodies at the dollar store (try Dollar Tree if you have one nearby). Even though I cant soak in a long hot bath like I want, a sweetly-scented one is still a treat.

And they say baby starts building their sense of smell about now. He/she will recognize familar scents after birth. Im going to have the only little boy addicted to green tea bath soap, but at least he'll be easier to soothe.

How much do you think stress affects your unborn child?

Due to recent events, I've been really sad, stressed, and scared. I'm trying to shake it, mostly because I don't want to inadvertently harm my child. But I can't quite recover and I'm worried that my baby feels it all.

This, of course, just adds to the stress. Someone please tell me that I'm overreacting and my baby will not be hurt by my (temporary) emotional distress...

I simply need a little reassurance right now :(

How you handle stress is an important aspect to consider. If your like me, you dont feel like your accomplishing something unless you're at least worrying about the problem and trying to solve it in your head. Allow yourself a certain amount of worry or freak-out time if its useful as a safety valve, but dont let worries control you. Sometimes you just cannot avoid stressful situations during pregnancy. Ive had a fair share myself and I just have to give myself a chance to freak out and then hit my reset button. Give yourself a little slack in the worry department. Women worry. Pregnant women worry. And we've been doing it for eons and giving birth to healthy babies all along the way. Ive had some pretty stressful events during my pregnancy, but the little butterball seems to be doing okay. Just dont let your stress get the better of you for long periods of time. Give yourself a little treat each day to help smooth over the bumps. Try not to let your pulse/blood pressure get out of control, and try not to let your digestive system get in an uproar over it.

There's no sense in stressing over trying not to stress about something. so cut yourself some slack. You're a woman, and you cannot turn off the worry/stress gene sometimes. Just dont let stress factors control you on a long-term basis.

If you dont feel you can escape, there's no shame in asking for help. Go to your OB and explain what's happening. He/she is the person best suited to help you when you cannot help yourself.

If I have a boy I am doing it in the hospital like I did with my son.

Are there benefits from circumcision?

There are several:

1 Many older men, who have bladder or prostate gland problems, also develop difficulties with their foreskins due to their surgeon's handling, cleaning, and using instruments. Some of these patients will need circumcising. Afterwards it is often astonishing to find some who have never ever seen their glans (knob) exposed before!

2 Some older men develop cancer of the ####### - about 1 in 1000 - fairly rare, but tragic if you or your son are in that small statistic. Infant circumcision gives almost 100% protection, and young adult circumcision also gives a large degree of protection.

3 Cancer of the cervix in women is due to the Human Papilloma Virus. It thrives under and on the foreskin from where it can be transmitted during intercourse. An article in the British Medical Journal in April 2002 suggested that at least 20% of cancer of the cervix would be avoided if all men were circumcised. Surely that alone makes it worth doing?

4 Protection against HIV and AIDS. Another British Medical Journal article in May 2000 suggested that circumcised men are 8 times less likely to contract the HIV virus. (It is very important here to say that the risk is still far too high and that condoms and safe sex must be used - this applies also to preventing cancer of the cervix in women who have several partners.)

A BBC television programme in November 2000 showed two Ugandan tribes across the valley from one another. One practised circumcision and had very little AIDS, whereas, it was common in the other tribe, who then also started circumcising. This programme showed how the infection thrived in the lining of the foreskin, making it much easier to pass on.

5 As with HIV, so some protection exists against other sexually transmitted infections. Accordingly, if a condom splits or comes off, there is some protection for the couple. However, the only safe sex is to stick to one partner or abstain.

6 Lots of men, and their partners, prefer the appearance of their ####### after circumcision, It is odour-free, it feels cleaner, and they enjoy better sex. Awareness of a good body image is a very important factor in building self confidence.

7 Balanitis is an unpleasant, often recurring, inflammation of the glans. It is quite common and can be prevented by circumcision.

8 Urinary tract infections sometimes occur in babies and can be quite serious. Circumcision in infancy makes it 10 times less likely

Ladies, since many of you here have boys- how do you feel about the "american tradition" of having them circumcised right after they're born?

I was kinda shocked when I heard that this is a routine over here for every boy. I really don't feel good about exposing my baby to this painful experience when he's just born and there is no medical reason for it.

Hubby thinks very traditional about it and he was shocked to hear that the USA is one of the few countries who still circumcise their baby boy's.

He says that when he was in High school there was a boy who wasn't circumcised and everybody harrassed him for it until he tried to circumcise himself with a kitchen knife, out of pure peer pressure. needless to say that went very wrong....

I don't know what to do, I really don't want my baby to resent us later if we decide to spare him from that painful and unneccessary experience.

any advice?

I am very much against it:

This topic is very contraversial. I truly believe it should be a personal decision.

I have a question for moms. Our Mason seems to pee through diapers and we have to change his clothes all the time. Is it because we are using newborn diapers with a cut for the umblical cord or we are not putting a diaper tight enough?

it sounds like the diapers might be too big or maybe you aren't doing them tight enough..

Ditto. When I was playing 2nd mommy for my nephew we had 'size-issues' with the diaper. A too-big diaper leaves too much room for escape. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find just the right fit. You may want to try another brand/size of diaper and cut out the belly-button hole yourself with some scissors. Make sure its snugly on his booty, but not leaving nasty red welts. You'll know if you're pinching his skin.

Mmmh...I had the very same problem with my son in his very first months of age, all of my friends who have boys did too...I don't think it has much to do with the diaper,it might but not necessarily..I think it probably has more to do with the fact boys' pee kinda goes wherever direction their little thingy points to inside the diaper  Also it was always their back to get wet for some reason, or the sides. All my friends who have girls never had this problem, only me and others with boys , so we all discussed and came to the conclusion stated above lol Which of course might be wrong :P

Don't worry, it'll get better ;)

Did he 'baptise" you or daddy yet? :D

ETA: congrats again, Mason is a real cutie!

what did the trick for me.. a helpful hint from my mother who is a Newborn Specialist..

Take the diaper.. turn it around.. fasten the tape back side. the bottom of the diaper is made for more fluid since it normally flows back and sits there. Just turn the top of the diaper.. fold it down.. take tabs that you normally would be fastening to front.. . now it will be taped in the back..

this sometimes helps with the leaky diaper.. hope it helps

with newborn boys the problem is always almost the driection his pee-pee points at. Make sure it points down when you close the diaper. I find the regular diapers useful that don't have the cut for the umbilical cord. You just fold them right below his belly button to the inside

First time moms also tend to put the diaper on too loose, but if you fold the diaper below the belly button, even a loser fitting diaper won't leak as much. That's how we did it at the hospital and it usually worked. Like Churipu said, girls rareley "leak" like boys do.

Hubster is soooooo anxious for the baby to be born on his birthday, February 8th. He's going to make one last appeal to the doc on Thursday to see if the baby can come a little early. LOL. His excuse is that Im so uncomfortable and he wants me to feel better  . It would be nice to have them share a birthday, they'd be exactly 30 years apart. But hubby's b-day is right at the 38 week mark, and doc thinks that's a tad too soon, unless I have major problems.

Happy Birthday for Suj, too!
