I had the tests done because I was 38 years old at the time of my pregnancy and therefore the risks were significantly higher. I had the fetal protein test and then I went to the regional children's hospital for a detailed ultrasound and genetic screening. If any of those tests had come back positive the next step would have been an amniocentesis. Fortunately everything was fine, in fact the genetic counselor told me I had the risk profile of a 26 year old. I guess I hadnt realized until that point that deep down I really WAS worried about some of the risks, but I remember leaving that last appointment and feeling like a huge weight had been lifted.

The tests, for me anyway, were done at about 18 or 19 weeks, were not about choosing what I was going to do if I found out I was having a Downs baby but more for peace of mind. I think the majority of women would opt to keep the baby but at least you have a few months to prepare and educate yourself and get your family ready and all of that. I dont think I would have had an amnio if it came to that mainly because I am totally freaked out by that long needle and by the risk involved. Even in a higher risk category I never felt any 'pressure' to have all the tests done. Maybe I just lucked out and have a super cool midwife/doctor, but when we were discussing all of it she was extremely clear that ALL of it was optional.

on a side note, Amirah started walking yesterday - just 4 or 5 steps at a time but its SO CUTE. She has to concentrate on it a lot (makes me laugh) but clearly she is very proud and impressed with herself... :P

Declan was 6 months yesterday. I can't believe how time has flown. He gets his shots tomorrow :(

We have to go to CT on Wednesday for his 4 month post surgery follow up. I have been really good and relaxed about his health for the past few months, but now that the check up is coming, I am getting anxious again. Rationally, I know he is fine, but just having to head back to the hospital is bringing up all the emotions I had 4 months ago.

It is called a diaphragmatic hernia ... basically was a hole in his diaphragm that allowed his stomach and some intestines to migrate into his chest cavity, which then compressed one of his lungs and pushed his heart over. The surgery repaired the hole and pushed the organs back to where they belong, allowing the lung to expand. One lung will always be a bit smaller than the other, but not significantly. The doc said he can do anything he wants, even scuba diving. Typically, diaphragmatic hernias are found at birth because the babies cannot breathe. Declan's was found at 2 months and he was healthy at the time, no breathing problems.

Here is some info. on diaphragmatic hernias:

Autumn, my best friend's daughter was born with a diaphragmatic hernia two and a half years ago. It was actually diagnosed in-vitro, and because it was so serious the dr recommended that she abort the baby. Naturally, she opted not to and her baby was born in April of 06. Her hernia was very severe and they could see on the U/S that the intestines and stomach were growing in the chest cavity, and one of her lungs had started growing down below the hernia. It was very messed up. The baby had surgery when she was 3 days old and she is doing just fine. She did reherniate 1 year later, but she hasn't had any problems since.

Best of luck with Declan...I'm sure he will do just fine at his 6 month check up.

AUTUMN, Yea now I remember what it was. Im sure Declan will do fine at his checkup! My boss' son had some gap in his stomach that was getting bigger. I guess he says its common in 1:200 newborn boys. I actually know a few friends who had it. The baby just couldnt digest food. They closed the gap and now the baby is doing much better.

Zaid had his 6 month well exam on saturday and received 4 vaccines. He had no reaction and is doing just fine. He is 29inches and 19lbs. My baby is getting so big :(

May 7, 2008 -- The safest spot for a baby's car seat is in the center of the back seat rather than on the sides, according to a new study.

"Children seated in the center rear have a 43% lower risk of injury compared with children in a rear outboard position."

you told me to read about it. it's pretty obvious what's the safest, my question is if it's forbidden or if it's ok, since we don't have a middle seat :bonk:
