I started zaid on rice first for a bout a week, then oatmeal, but i always do half oatmeal or rice and half fruit or veggie on the spoon..

i would start with one thing at a time, that way if he she is allergic, you know what caused it...

Chnst! Ben is such a chunky monkey! he doesnt look that big in his pics...we arent going for a 5 month checkup but at 4 months zaid was about 17lbs 28inches (i think) i dont even want to guess what he will be at 6 months! we all seem to have some chunky healthy boys around here...

Stina, I am glad everything went well with Kavi's surgery. I hope he recovers quickly.

@autumnn: he's 27 inches even. Believe it or not, but there was a boy only 2 weeks older than Ben and he was twice the size of Ben!! Babies are just huge these days. I just looked at my baby book when I was 5 months I weighed 15lbs. Hubby was about the same. I really don't know where he gets it from, but he's a monster!

so... Hubby and I got all exited about Ben's first "din-din" tonight (oatmeal). We made a big fuss, set up the camera, expecting a huge mess .... but he hated it! We tried so hard but he would not eat anything.:no:

Then we tried a jar of bananas and he finished it off within 2 minutes, and the bib went back into the drawer because it was still clean.

Did you guys ever have problems with the cereals?

Heh, he is pretty big! I was looking at Liv's records and she was 8.38 kg or 18.5 lbs and 67cm/26.4 inches at 5.5 months. A lil big for a girl, but still normal (60-70% percentile, I think). She is now 37.5 inches and 35lbs at 30 months, so about the 95% percentile for height and 90% for weight. She gets taller every day, I swear it. They don't stay little babies for long!

Babies live to spoil your plans. :P I am glad he ended up eating the bananas though! At least you hopefully got some good shots of him eating then.

I don't have a lot of advice about feeding babies solids. Liv had zero interest in solids until she was about 9 months and then it was just play until she gave up the formula at 13 months or so. We went straight to finger foods after that.

I know most of you have little pre-verbal children, but raising a bilingual child is a real trip. Right now we are finally having some real progress with her vocabulary. She tends to have word preferences and I wonder at this point what idea of language distinction she has. Does she know that 'zu' is German and 'trash' is English? I have no idea. She uses them all as if they were just different words in the same language right now. Rarely, we will get a single language sentence 'ich will milch' or 'look, I made a 'g''. Most of the time it is just one to three word phrases or questions in mixed language. The doctor at her 30 month checkup said that even at her age, this is normal for a bilingual child. She said that although some studies say bilingual children have no speech delays, she has never seen that to be the case in her experience, and gave the warning not to compare our child too closely to monolingual children at this stage.

People are supportive of the bilingual thing. We were at Aldi a while back and a woman and her husband noticed my husband speaking German to our daughter and wanted to talk to us about it. They said that their daughter married a man from Lebanon and had several children with him, however, he refused to teach the children either French or Arabic, both of which he was a fluent speaker. The couple that that was an awful shame and commended us on doing it with our daughter.

I've worked with a lot of dual language learners at the preschool level (around age 3) and from what I've seen, they will code switch (back and forth, mix the two languages they know) with people who know both (like their parents), but once they are in an environment like a daycare where only one is spoken, they will begin to understand the 'home' language and the 'outside' language. For these children, their English vocab is usually behind English only speakers, and their grammar is less perfect (more 'Her is going...', 'What is him said...' type things past the age many others peers have stopped), but as a whole those are minor issues. I always encouraged parents who were concerned about their child's English that what is most important is they stick with speaking their home language at home, because going to school and living here in the states will more than take care of the child's English. Stick with it. It will be an awesome part of your child's growth that not many of us get!

@pixiegun and Wacken: thanks for the encouragement. I've wondered what it would be like raising my baby bi-lingual.

I hope that I'm going to be consequent enough to speak german to Ben, since my husband doesn't speak any german (except when he needs to order beer  )

@Nanny: yay, congrats on the teeth! did she have a hard time teething?

Wow Chnst, 19.5 pounds?!!! How tall is Ben?

We just started Declan on solids after his 4 month checkup. So far, he has had rice cereal, peas, and pears and loves them all. No allergic reactions which is good.

We also just started Jay on cereal, otmeal and apple sauce. And she is drinking a small amount of apple juice everyday. Doctor told us to try to get all the vegs, cereals in fruits in before 6 months. So we try something new ever week fun fun.

Chnst glad to hear Ben is doing great. :star:

Chnst - We tried rice cereal first and Declan liked it okay, but was much more enthuisiastic about eating pears and peas than he was the cereal. I had expected more with the cereal and was a bit disappointed, but got the reaction after he had peas.

I love how big Ben is, that's awesome. You and hubby are both pretty tall, aren't you?

Declan was 26.5 inches at his 4 month check, but only about 15 pounds. If he continues like this, he will definitely be a tall skinny boy.

Jaylyn loved her cereal but she snarfed down her apple sauce. It was less messy too which was nice.

Hi Girls!

Hope everything is well, here I'm not doing so good with horrible nauseas and barely keeping food in my stomach, some friends suggested crackers, others ginger ale, water, what else is good??? I checked my weight this morning and realized that instead of gaining weight I'm loosing weight, I look really sick, and is funny that everybody here is saying that I don't look so good, I'm going to have a girl. .

Take care girls and have a good weekend!

Vi -- have you tried taking a B vitamin supplement? I swear that is what kept most of my morning sickness at bay.

AFM -- I got a call from my OB's office yesterday stating that the culture they did on Monday came back positive for an infection -- the true cause of the issues earlier this week. They called in a script for me. I get to the pharmacy and they at first did not think it was called in. Then, they realized it was the one they were clueless about -- my name and my doctor's name was screwed up. So...they were going to fill it for me when the pharmacist came and talked to me. She asked me if I was pregnant and if so, how far along. She said what they prescribed for me she would not feel comfortable filling for a pregnant woman in the pill form, but the gel form would be ok. So...she asked me to call the answering service and get the doctor-on-call to call. Luckily this happened and I began my course of treatment last night.

Kaila wasn't to bad with her teeth...she has a couple of days were she was cranky and had the sniffles and i gave her some tylenol to help her a little....also read a great idea of freezing her pacifiers and that seemed to help!

Wow I can't believe she has teeth. Jay is drooling all the time and has to suck on a teething ring all day. I think we will be joining u soon Shauna. Thanks for the freezer tip.

I did well on iced-cold foods. Iced juice, jello, popsicles, etc. Fruit-flavored foods seemed to settle better than others. Sprite and Orange Crush also helped, especially with alot of ice. Saltine crackers, of course. And crunchy breadsticks. Plain ones were more palatable than garlic, at least to me.

I know it seems like the tummy problems will never end, but for most folks it does go away. I spent every morning for the first 4 months gagging on my toothbrush and barfing on myself in the shower. Then Id go to work and spend most of the morning running to the bathroom. Tough times, but I wouldnt change it for the world. The end result is priceless :)
