Welcome home and congratulations on having that behind you now, Autumnchik. I hope things start to look up for your little man and that soon this will just be a memory and a chapter in the baby book :_

about immunizations: I just went with the traditional route. actually I never even thought about spacing them out but I if I had I guess I would say, it sucks for them and they hate it every time so personally I would rather just get it over with all at once and be done for a few months....

my 2 cents.

Aside from the professional, I am also probably what most everyone here thinks of as a total failure of a mother. I was not able to breastfeed my children (don't even begin to say it is because I didn't try or didn't have support - I did). I had a C/S for my son and don't feel it is something that I should feel horribly disappointed in - my son is just as much my son no matter how he came into this world. I use Avent bottles - yes, they have BPA, it doesn't mean I love my child less. I had no hesitation in getting both my children immunizations on the schedule as recommended. There are reasons they are recommended that way and I believe the studies that show why.

So, as much as I don't seem to fit, I know there are many other women that are just like me. And really, the only reason I am even posting this, is because I think those women might feel too intimidated to join in.

Keltic...that is just silly. No one on this forum or anywhere has the right to judge you as a mother. There is no handbook or instructions that come with motherhood. Anyone that feels you are an unfit parent because of the reasons you posted should just shove it where the sun don't shine! As long as you are doing the best you can and providing all the love you can for your child...thats what makes you a total sucess as a mother IMO.

As far as your reasons for posting this...I have noticed that people get defensive on this thread when someone prefers not to do something that others are doing. A perfect example of this was a few pages back when there was a discussion regarding sleeping with the baby in your bed.

I think its important for everyone to remember that there is no right or wrong way for doing things. Everyone has to make judgements on their own about what is right for their family and their child. My grandmother raised 8 kids and never had a doctor or a book to refer too and they all came out fine. I think everyones input here is very valueable and sometimes people will make a decision by weighing out all the input that is posted and coming up with the right solution for them.

Thank you and everyone else for the support. I have been around for a long time and not planning on disappearing completely. I certainly lurk more than post. Usually when I post now, it is because I feel strongly that I should represent or clarify things from a different point (basically defend my profession). I would also, however, be the first to call the medical community on things that I see as wrong or at least questionable. For example, I coslept with my daughter for years and my son still sometimes shares our bed. It is stronly recommended against by the AAP. For me, I looked at their own numbers of children that died from SIDS alone in a crib vs the number of children who died in the family bed. That was enough to support what I felt strongly about and what families all over the world have done safely for ages. I will always clarify that there should be no drinking, smoking or drug use if you cosleep. Those things are what actually cause most of the deaths that occur in a family bed.

Anyway, my son is healthy and happy. My daughter is healthy and, well, acting like a preteen, which she is. I think my children are great. I do not think of myself as a failure as a mom. I just want to make sure that noone else feels that they are for choosing/having the same choices/circumstances.

I also just went with the traditional shots schedule. It's 5 shots but at Kavi's office it's only 3 needles,,,so some are combined though someone wrote that at their Dr's office it was all separate(ouchie!).

AT the 2 months shots, Kavi was fine the next day. At his 4 months shots, he had a fever that night and the whole next day, 101.9 at the highest. So I can't imagine having to deal with that often(like spaced out and if they all give reaction) instead of after all shots being done on the same day. He was miserable, I was miserable...

Hi guys! Declan was discharged today and the doctor gave the okay for us to head home to New Hampshire!!! We just got in a couple hours ago, and it is such a relief to be back home. He seems to be feeling better, still a little fussy and gassier than ever. I have to remind myself that he only had surgery a week ago and that he still needs time to heal and return to normal.

I am very glad that Declan did so well with his surgery. I am also very glad that you have had so much support. That is paramount in being able to make it through scary times like you've had recently.

Keltic - I too appreciate your posts and hope that you continue to post here. My experience with the medical community has been positive, especially with everything that happened recently with my child. People here will have differing opinions on things, and there is no one right answer.

Thank you. Most ppl who go into the medical field do it to try to help and are really compassionate. It is good that you were surrounded by that.

Question for everyone about immunizations (I really do want to hear differing opinions): How did people decide what schedule to do immunizations on .... traditional or a schedule speading out the immunizations. Declan was due for his 2 month immunizations on the 8th, but we missed that appointment due to the surgery. We are scheduled to go in next Tuesday. I have been going back and forth on whether to get all his shots then, or just do a couple and spread them out. Poor baby has been through so much lately. I am not sure what to do.

Here is a link that might help:

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/...plevaccines.htm

When we have babies at work who are with us for 60 days or more, then we administer the 2 month immunizations. The doctor who is at the head of the infectious disease section of our group will not let us separate the shots even over 2 days. He feels that there is actually a potentiated effect when given together (meaning they work better). Other docs will let us spread it out over 36 hours. I honestly have not seen any difference in how the babies react.

Either way you go, one thing that really will help (and I think someone else may have posted it) is to gently rub your child's thighs just after the immunizations. It helps the muscle absorb the immunization and disperse it. There will be less tenderness and/or "knotting" afterwards.

By the 2 month immunizations, your doc will probably tell you what dose of Tylenol is safe to give. You could even call and ask ahead of your visit so you can give it before you get there. They will need to know how much he weighed at his most recent check. I give it to my son about 30 mins prior to his immunizations.

Infant Motrin is a bit misleading. It IS marketed as "infant", but it is not considered safe for general use in infants under 6 months. The reason is it can be very damaging to the liver, more so than Tylenol. It is best used for when an infant has a really high fever and does not respond to Tylenol. That being said, if your pediatrician tells you to use it, then certainly follow his advice if you wish. Many things are definites, but somethings are left to the discretion of each individual pediatrician.

(Just a side note: A type of ibuprofen is used in neonates, however, but for a much different purpose. It can be used instead of another drug to help close a PDA that is causing problems.)

While we are on the subject of immunizations, did anyone else see this fairly recent news?

CDC Warns About Measles Outbreaks

ATLANTA, May 1, 2008

(AP) Measles outbreaks in several states have led to more than 70 cases so far this year, the worst in six years, health officials said Thursday.

Most of the cases have been traced to outbreaks overseas and are mainly in children who were not vaccinated for religious or other reasons or were too young, according to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention. Since measles vaccinations began in the early 1960s, cases have dramatically declined in the U.S.

So far this year, the CDC has confirmed reports of 64 cases in nine states. There were no deaths, but 14 people were hospitalized, said CDC spokesman Curtis Allen.

That count doesn't include Washington state, where eight cases were reported this week. Those cases stemmed from an international church conference in suburban Seattle in March, according to the state health department.

In our discharge teaching, the reason parents are told not to supplement with water, is that everything an infant eats/drinks should have calories in it. The baby can miss valuable nutrients and calories that would have been in breastmilk/formula.

Here is some further information about supplementing with water:

http://rehydrate.org/breastfeed/faq-exclus...eastfeeding.htm

That article is exactly what I was told by my ped. We have decided to follow those guidelines. When our daughter turns 6 months, we will begin feeding her and giving her juice.

Our daughter received 3 shots yesterday. She cried about 20 minutes and then slept pretty much the rest of the afternoon. I'm sure how they jabbed those needles in her little tiny thighs hurt, but she is a strong little girl.

FYI-No fever last night or this morning.

It was my Dr's office who did 6 vaccinations, 1 oral and 5 seperate shots. But, I am glad it's only once every 2 months. I couldn't bear it being more often than that.

Stina - When is Kavi's surgery? I'll be thinking about you. One of the toughest things for me was watching them put IV's in my baby, but honestly, it was harder for me than him. He did great, only cried one time (after the first IV leaked after a couple days, the nurses had a hard time putting in a second one and that is when he cried. At the time of the surgery, they put in a central IV line and he was fine with that too). A pacifier dipped in sucrose water was the best thing for him, really took his mind off the pain.

I am glad that you and Declan are home and safe now. It is good to know that he is doing good!! I hope he has a smooth recovery.

We are doing shots on the normal schedule. When we went at our 2 month appoitment they didn't have one shot in. So we had to go when she was 3 months old for that one. The ones for her 2 months she cried for a few days and her leg was red for 4 days. The last one she got at 3 months she cried for 10 minutes and was fine. I brought her Enfamil vitamins. She cheered up when I gave her vitamins and was fine. I would just say get it over with like everyone said.

When is ok to piece the baby's ears.... :star:

My brother and neighbor had their daughters ears pierced after their 2 month shots and they seem fine. I will be making this a choice for my daughter later on in life.

Oh my goodness I was watching Tyra Banks show today and this lady nursed her kid until 8 years old. That is a 3rd grader now this I find weird. I thought there weren't much benefits after the age of 5 years old. Then her daughter when she was 9 asked for breast milk for a present. I was amazed but she said she did not get much milk because her sucking ability was gone. I thought most people quit by age 3 or 4. hmm
