Engagement Ring

Hey everyone!

Just wondering if you need to mention that you got an engagement ring?

Had someone tell me that if you do disclose this info, they need receipts, appraisals and so on...sounds like a hassle to me!

Now what if you don't disclose this info, will they question you about it during your interview? OR will they see you wearing the ring and question you about it...maybe at the interview or POE?

Please let me know if you've encountered this...

Hi Marebear :)

Welcome to VJ

First :time:

You can include a copy of the engagement ring receipt in the K1 petition (is that what you are filing for?) but it doesn't really prove that you have met in the past two years. Anyone can buy a ring. Anyone can wear that ring as well, it doesn't really prove anything.

What they want to see is proof that you have met in the last 2 years. Boarding passes, plane tickets, stamps in passport, hotel receipts, car rental receipts, etc. etc. Pictures as well.

The ring is really the last thing they are looking for. At the interview they want to see an ongoing relationship. More pictures, more visits to see one another, letters, emails, phone calls, etc. etc.

Check out the Guides here at VJ and have a look at what the requirements are for the visa you are filing for.

Best of luck to you

I wore my ring to the interview, and we had the reciept for it at our interview as "additional evidence".. but we didn't mention it in our initial application and we never showed the receipt at the interview.. it really didn't come up! It didn't come up at the POE either.. I had my ring on but no one mentioned it ...

I wouldn't worry about it. Like Emanc above...nobody ever asked to see mine at the interview or border...cripes they didn't even ask to see much other evidence either and we had a ton! We had SO many trips back and forth and plane tickets etc that I doubt they needed anything beyond that.

Lots of things are nice to have in the back of your pocket if needed in future. My experience through VJ is that I've always been overly prepared for everything. I think because there are so many folks from different countries here there may be some different practices between various embassies, dunno.

Cheers

I did not attend the interview, so no one saw my ring.

When we sent in the I-129F, I had a copy of the receipt, a picture of my hand with the ring on, and pictures of us on the night we got engaged....at "our spot" and then opening our bottle of champagne with friends and family the next morning.

A receipt for your engagement ring can be used as proof of an on-going relationship, but it is not necessary. It is not even necessary to have an engagement ring at all. From what I have seen in posts from people who were denied or required to supply additional evidence at the consulate stage, I think that what they are really looking for in terms of "proof of ongoing relationship" is proof that you communicate with each other on a day-to-day basis between visits (not necessarily every day, but regularly) and that you know each other. As Laura said, the ring doesn't really prove anything because anyone intending to get married for whatever reason can get a ring (heck, I've even heard of women who have bought themselves rings to avoid being hit on by random men while travelling solo!). But they do list it as possible evidence of on-going relationship.

Jomo's Girl, that has to be one of the sweetest things I've ever read---"our spot." Awww!

It was the most amazing spot.....at the very end of the airport runway. If you've ever been to Sangster, it is where the lights come out of the Caribbean to guide the planes in. A little difficult to get to; but amazing to see the planes fly directly over your head.

It's where he asked me to marry him.

Hmmm, I didn't even buy rings until after I'd immigrated and before we got married. I knew that rings would be cheaper to buy in the US than in Canada....we wound up buying them on the internet later on :D Even so, the no sales tax thing in the US saves me a couple of bucks.

So I had no ring purchases, receipts, or pictures at my interview or border crossing.

I can´t think of a reason why they would be interested in an engagement ring at POE. I think some people don´t even have/wear an engagement ring prior to marriage and I have seen many people only wearing a wedding band...
